Title: Tow bar fitting ?
Post by: omega3000 on 15 July 2014, 14:27:38
97 MV6 towbar position fitment ? Cant see any guide on oof to do this (http://www.thessdreview.com/Forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=3411&d=1390162041)
Read the manual and nothing in there either , does the towbar literally fit to the boot floor as it looks very flimsy  :o

What kind of set up have you got? A Bosal bar has a big plate on the inside of the boot floor that the bar hangs off. Witter box section bars sit under the boot floor and look ugly as sin  ::) but still use the same fixing points. There's a long-ish tube where the bar fits near the diff that go into the rear chassis sections.

The owners manual gives the mounting measurements and layout of the fixings... :-\ should also be a plate with the tow bar which reinforces the floor where the towbar attaches :y

If this isn't present then I would be having words with the seller...

Witter bars don't have the plate

Thats the same as mine with the big bracket that goes number plate end  :y But i have 2 more plates with it  ??? Ive found the nipples at number plate end , removed the tar stuff and drilled to 10 mm but the bolts are bigger  :o Im guessing the washers sit under the big plate to bridge the boot floor gap  :-\

And looks like ill have to remove bumper to drill and fasten securing bolts  >:(

That doesn't look right to me. :-\

IIRC, mine has an angled section at that end which fits into the boot, and bolts up to the towbar from underneath and rearwards to the rear panel of the boot in the direction of the bumper.

At the front there's a section that bolts up through holes already in the chassis crossmember between the wheels, with spacers inserted into the crossmember and small spreader plates in the boot.

Probably best to post a picture of what you have and we'll see if we can figure out where it goes.

Just drilled the 6 holes , fitted the thickest angled bar against the rear inside the boot .. Looking at the picture it seems to be right with the 2 support brackets clamped over the top .
4 nipples in the boot towards the back ive drilled seem to locate where it does in the picture  :-\

If you look at the right hand bolt , underneath is a thick washer to bridge the gap .. ive also got 2 of theses  :)

Angled bar inside the boot at the back ..

Not that it makes a difference, but its a 1998 MV6.  MV6 retail wasn't available in pre MY1998

For the benefit of me and anyone who needs the proper diagram ive found this file with the diagram of the parts needed to fit ... Ill be needing the 2 rear Bushes (90mm long, 25mm O.D.) H1  ::)

Hopefully i can purchase them from Witter  :(

Yep , that what i did too  ;) I was tempted to just fit it without the tubing but didnt want the tin tent ripping the boot out  ;D Sanded down the tow bar and lashings of hammerite applied while i await the tubing  :y

How disappointing from Witter  :( Still i bet they would want an arm and leg for the parts anyway , stuff em  >:(

I found the loom with the black connecting block , a double sided thing where the unwired piece pulls out . If i can get the proper connections that go into the block then the loom can be wired in , otherwise ill need to cut into the loom and solder in  :y
