Seems to be something of an epidemic, there was a crash in Taiwan yesterday with 58 of 68 souls lost: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-28457657
I see via our travel agency that China is conducting "exercises" around it's airports so there are 25% less flights than normal and many airlines have suspended flights into Israel after a rocket landed a mile from the airport (except BA who are still flying there..)..

The plane is actually a MD83, but the report states that previously in was stated it was an Airbus 320. Big difference. ;)

With so many planes in the air its a miracle we don't lose more to be honest.
Great web site for flight info.
Check out the 3d button that shows cockpit view.

What I fail to understand is that if a satellite can read a number plate, how the freak can it not see a plane ???

Uses Google Earth to show what the pilots could be seeing based on heading and altitude... doesn't work on all aircraft and on all computers :y

It's a question of knowing where to look... you can search along a flight plan, but that gives a very broad track, and doesn't allow for any deviation off route :-\
As an example. You're looking for a red car travelling from London to Edinburgh. You know it left at noon, and should therefore arrive at about 6pm. It fails to arrive by nine, so you then go looking. Starting at Edinburgh and working south, you would look at the M1/A1/A1M corridors, tracing them back towards London until you found it.
But what if the driver had deviated from the plan and gone M40/M42/M6, then cut across from Carlisle to Edinburgh and stopped in Lancaster for the night :-\
Using satellites, you would never find it :y
Also airspace is three dimensional, whereas the ground is by and large two dimensional...

There is a gps based system that is currently being retro fitted to commercial aircraft but it is not yet fitted to all.
This will relay back flight data (same as the black box records) real time so if the plane has an incident the data is already back at base awaiting analysis.
No searching for boxes.
Unfortunately this all take time to complete and so at the moment not all the planes are equipped with it.

Over 10,000 flights in progress when I looked :o

And that is the big fear since 9/11 when a plane "disappears". To lose a plane in a crash is bad enough, but one that actually is still flying and does not respond to radio calls..................................................!! :(
