I had a nice surprise yesterday. As you know, I was recently "laid off".
I was called into a meeting yesterday afternoon. The manager that took the decision not to keep me on, has since left ( :D )- and the powers that be have decided they need someone to fill the gap ::)
As such, I have been made an offer for a permanent, full time technical management role in the NHS IT Development Team.
We've discussed terms, and I've managed to negotiate what is by comparison a very attractive package.
It will be a very hands on role, looking after a bunch of web developers, and leading the organisation through some pretty big changes in the way we deliver web based information. I will also be the "buck stop" for a group of servers, ISP arrangements, web security etc... but ultimately the role will be whatever I make it.
Next week I will be mostly off - with a start date for my new role of Tuesday 1st July 08. :)
Looks like I might enjoy the lakes meet afterall :y

Congrats James..Happy to to hear that :y

Glad to hear that your worries are over.
However, in an environment where that sort of nonsense has nearly happened once, bear in mind that history could repeat itself..

Very true,
Thing to remember though, is that before they could just "let me go" because I wasn't on a permanent contract.
I'm now permanent staff - they'd have hell of a job to get rid of me by comparison :y

True - they can't try the "You're required to attend an interview - for your own job" bull once you're an established permie.

Congratulations!
Although, speaking from personal experience, I'm not sure that's appropriate if you're working on a Government IT contract.
I have to grit my teeth and think of the money to get through the day without hitting someone.
Not that the money's much good...
"It's being so cheerful as keeps me going" :) :) :)

Let's hope that the said manager's departure leaves you clear to pave your own way. It's a positive sign that you're wanted back now he's gone. :y
-
Good news.
I enjoyed managing a group of good lads who looked after around 100 odd NHS Windows servers, though eventually the NHS politics wore me down, so I moved on ::)

Nice one James well done, hope the t**t who laid you off doesn't like his new job and wants to come back, if I was you I'd take great delight in telling him what he could do with himself.
