I thought that in this type of situation aircraft were diverted to Stanstead where there is an action plan for such incidents :-\

As you say Stanstead is kitted out for Hijacking, Terrorism and other serious threats, Intel must have suggested that this was an hoax at an early stage and decision was made to deal with it at Manchester.

Intel must have suggested that this was an hoax at an early stage and decision was made to deal with it at Manchester. Thank goodness for that. But my question is, if there was a bomb on board, 'just what was a Typhoon going to do'???

The jet would potentially shoot the aircraft from the sky if it was seen to deviate from it's agreed destination, I would suggest, to prevent it being flown into a 'vulnerable/sensitive' target such as a refinery, hospital, parliament or similar......

That point was covered in sky news, with a very carefully considered reply, in that the typhoon pilot was there to give "an expert eyes on opinion" on the condition of the jet, meaning, ie if there was an explosion onboard but the plane still flew, eyes on could give 1st hand info as to condition of control surfaces response and landing gear condition.

You may of seen chase planes escorting the space shuttle to landing etc.

And, ultimately, shoot the thing down as said, if a kidnap situation developed where the a330 was flown off course, by another party, for instance. I'm sure if they'd had the chance the planes that flew into the twin towers would of been shot down long before they flew over a heavily populated area.

They didn't mention that last bit though, obviously.
