Post by: hawke113a on 07 August 2014, 15:04:53
the wife was driving the car today and the heater matrix has gone...spraying water all over her feet....what would cause this to happen...i have suspected the head gaskets are on their way out....i had the water pump done two weeks ago....and i have noticed she is using loads of water....i need to sort this asap as the wife is using the car for work.....

Have you used radweld previously? Don't use any more if you have, and don't use any if you haven't...

Quick fix, disconnected the heater pipes at the bulkhead and join with a short length of copper pipe.

This bypasses the heater completely :y

Setting the temp to Lo will stem the flow, but bypassing it with the pipe is better. You then have until October to replace the matrix :y

Could just be corrosion caused by shoddy coolant maintenance...  Coolant is always under pressure when the engine is running regardless of temperature as the water pump is always spinning. The new pump might have tipped a weak matrix over the edge. Oil cooler is probably not too far behind :-\

Neither is insurmountable, and both diyable if you're handy with the spanners :y

You could leave the oil cooler until it fails, but if the system is neglected enough to blow the heater matrix, then I wouldn't trust it for long... Besides it's easier to deal with before it fills the engine with muck...

Either way you will have to fix the matrix or its going to be hard to sell unless you want peanuts for it  :( Worth fixing though imo  :y

Easy enough job if you take the "short cut" method - matrix cheap enough, less than £20 ;)
