Title: A/C packed up
Post by: Sir Tigger KC on 12 August 2014, 09:01:54
So my love affair with A/C was short and sweet after regassing it a couple of months ago and having working A/C for the first time in years, yesterday it was blowing warm air!  :(

The compressor and fans are working, so where next? Condensor?  :-\

Is the low pressure pipe under the bonnet getting cool?

Is that the one with the trumpet type thingie?  :-\  ::)

I'm an A/C ignoramus!  ;D

Yup :y next to the throttle, above the PAS pump...

Ideally it will be covered in condensation and be cold to the touch :y

If it is hot, then you have an issue :'(

If the valves have been changed then the condenser is probably toast...

Condenser failure mode would be a leak, though, which would stop the compressor due to low pressure. :-\

If you start it up from "cold", you should feel the low pressure pipe mentioned getting cold quite quickly.

Also, the high pressure pipe, which is down in front of the aux. pullies - a little U shaped pipe with one of the fill valves on it, should start getting warm.

If this happens to start with, and there's some cooling, but it peters out, it could be that you have moisture in the refrigerant circuit that's freezing up and blocking it or that the expansion valve is allowing the evaporator to get so cold that it freezes up and restricts airflow through it.

If the pipes stay cold/hot respectively, but it's blowing warm air, it could be one of the blending flaps directing hot air into the cabin or the HBV not switching off the hot water flow.

If they don't stay or get hot/cold it could be the expansion valve not allowing the evaporator to get cold enough.

Ultimately, you probably need to get an aircon guy to measure the pressures and diagnose it that way but at least you can rule out any issues not related to the aircon circuit itself.

Why not take it back to the buy who refilled it? He might take a look FOC, especially considering it's an offence to fill a leaky system.

Has the valve been checked?  :y

As tunnie says valves first, then bottom of the condenser, normally falls apart. :)

I havn't had a chance to have a proper look today, but I did feel the pipes and the low pressure pipe was warm and the bottom one quite hot.  I'll investigate further tomorrow and thanks for the replies!  :y :y :y

Not sure to be honest Emd.  :-\  Although they did tell me it was tested for leaks.  :y

Had my ac done but then it went warm again after a day or so  :( Took the black plastick screw cover off and seen the yellow dye slightly bubbling out the valve so replaced that and no more leaks  :y

If the monsoon has passed tomorrow I'll have a look!  :y
