Title: bathroom silcone sealant
Post by: tidla on 13 August 2014, 19:42:59
The shower in my house is well used. Refitted in 2010 and had to change the sealant twice already because of black mold.

I have used so called quality sealants with a 10+ guarantee to no avail.

Is there any trade recommendations for a quality sealant product which wont go moldy.

Price is not a problem, as i can use the remainder on some cam cover gaskets. (runs and hides)

Thanks.

Use the black VX cam cover goo, then you won't see the mould!  :y

I'm saying nothing, as Mrs TB reapplying sealent has ended up with a cracked shower tray.  Only being Betamax man, it looks like its a non standard sized tray. 'dangle berries'.

Try mould and mildew remover.....i use it now and again....spray it on, leave it to do it work...and the black mould disappears...then rinse off  :y

. . . . . .  also DO NOT close the shower doors when not in use, leave open. This completely sorted the problem for us.

What you need is a low modulus silicone sealent that, preferably has a fungicide in it.

Pretty much anything external and non marine (as in fish tank) use is good. Needs to be low modulus due to the movement

I use ArboSil 1096, made by Adshead Ratcliffe 15 years and no mould in my bathroom so far. Its designed for bonding glass to glass in curtain wall and perimeter seals (so I get it free), has lots of flexability and good adhesion thats why it doesn't peel off surfaces like other silicones over time. Really easy to tool off as well

Far better than Dow 791, if you do go Dow then get 995 which is their alternative to 1096

Most damp, mildew or mould issues are sorted with ventilation ime. Leave the shower door open as said, fit a good humidistat extractor fan, and open windows as soon as is practical after shower use.

Unrelated after thought, that karcher window vac is good for removing moisture from glass shower panels, mirrors and tiles etc. Keeps water marks to an absolute minimum, even with a water softener, and in this instance, maybe it will keep moisture down in the unit itself..?

Generally avoid anything that describes itself as a "sealant".  Anything you could possibly buy in B&Q/Homebase is junk. Get a trade low mod silicone.

Thin bleach sprayed on and left is fairly effective at killing black mold and keeping grout and silicone white.  :y

I use Auto Glym caravan black streak remover to clean around the edges of the shower basin, mould doesn't get a chance to build up.

I have a wife who deals with all that,

before getting in shower, I open the velux, no steam, dont even have to run the fan to clear it,

Had a look out for the corning stuff at the local builders merchant to no avail, just the evostik brands.

As for cleaning, Mary Poppins comes and cleans every Friday. (mother in law)

Get the kids to move out is another option..

Are you saying that the products of long-established companies like Evode, with their Evo-Stik "Whte for Life" bathroom sealant are not fit for purpose?
I am in the process of renewing the sealant on the bath surround and it seems good so far; maybe it won't be, in 20 years' time?
