Title: Death of the Furai
Post by: chrisgixer on 16 August 2014, 09:29:35
Talk of rotary engines came up at the Curry do this week, with Aaron's project leading to the inevitable discussion on all things rotary, from Nortons to, ultimately, The Mazda Furai.

A one off concept rotary engined ethanol gulping fire spitting work of art, with a sound track not dissimilar to a Tazmian devil on acid. Alas, no more...  :'(

Death of the Furai, due to fire.  :'(

Bit of T-cut…

I saw that car at Goodwood (the year it was produced, I think) - it sounded absolutely bonkers going up the hill climb..

That always struck me as a better home for the Wankel engine than something marketed as a daily driver coupe.
The engine's main characteristics (terrible fuel economy, lousy emissions, lack of torque, and hopeless durability) would have been far less of a problem. The RX8 is final proof that Wankel engines simply aren't suited for cars. Although everybody but Mazda realised that decades ago.
