Just changing the oil on this for a neighbour. Mileage 150k, plugs were changed at last service, since then he tells me that when it is warm, it often stalls as he slows down/stops at lights etc. The slow running speed appears OK, I suspect a mixture/fuel problem, as it performs well under power. Any ideas? :y

Coolant temperature sensor.
They fail as frequently as the crank sensor on a V6 or a cam sensor on a 4 pot Omega.
(of course the correct thing to do is hook it up to a code reader and do a proper diagnosis but the sensors are not expensive and the symptoms are there or thereabouts)
The wiring on SWMBOs V reg Golf is nasty - thin and brittle I have had to fix numerous fractured cables. The favourite place is the short loop of cables from under the battery across to the engine. A dodgy connection there could give symptoms as described.

Thanks Andy, I will suggest changing it. Regarding the plug change charged for, 12k ago, I've started removing the plugs, and am certain from the tightness of the cover mounting bolts, the oily detritus in the area above the wells and the condition of the plugs, that they have not been replaced for at least 30k.
B####dy rip-off garages. >:( >:( >:(

What a garage, just noticed that when they changed his broken front spring, they didn't bother to tighten the top shock nut! >:( >:( >:(
