Title: RESULT ! . . . . . Solid fuel range thingy
Post by: Rog on 18 August 2014, 22:05:31

You know, posh people love to drop in the "Aga in the kitchen" mention. Well in my move from North London to West Wales the house didn't have an Aga but a Rayburn. During the sale/buying process the Rayburn featured prominently " Oh yes, coal or logs just top it up and leave it on 24/7, cooks, heats water, and does absolutely everything else . . . . "Luvy . . Darling".

After the move, turns out it was a death trap. Zero ventilation, big risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, serious chimney fire risk etc etc. Previous owner had been burning unseasoned conifer wood. The rayburn was meant for just coal. So, the resin from the wood tars up the Rayburn and the chimney.

So called experts brought in all had really expensive solutions. Chimney re-lining and new units etc, costs over £5k   ???

Called in another chimney sweep for second opinion. Long story cut short, job done for £150. I was gobsmacked, and VERY happy. Partly cooked dinner on it tonight. And, it's fun. You get to poke around with fire and things.

Conclusion: When your used to London prices, it's very easy to get taken to the cleaners.

You could have saved yourself that £150 by tying a brush shank to your bog brush Rog & having a 'dirty weekend' ;D ;)
