Why is it that replacement batteries for drills are so darned expensive? Sooner or later, they all give up holding a charge. My Bosch drill just gave up the ghost and a quick check on t'internet revealed that replacement batteries are in the £30-£40 range!
So, went to Woolies and bought a cheapo 18v drill for the princely sum of £14.50. Job done! :y
I can recycle the old batteries, so that leaves me the proud owner of the following drill bodies: 1 x Black&Decker, 1 x Skil, 1 x Bosch.
Anyone got space in their skip? ;)

Chop the battery packs open and replace the cells with new rechargeables with solder tabs on them, then glue them back together. :y

Yep, thats what I do.
They tend to conatin Sub-c cells
From bitter experience though, the cheap drills are really poor and the batteries dont last due to cheap and evil chargers which really bugger them!
I currently have a Makita 18V combi which is the dogs nadgers....and easy to re-cell to because the batteries are not solvent welded up!

Agree, the Makita drills are awesome :y

Yes, guys, you're probably right about replacing the innards on the battery holder. What I may do is to break open the Bosch and have a go - then I'll have two serviceable drills, which would be useful when you're doing big job. :y
Mind you, after yesterday, I'm not sure about "fixing" things. I decided to put new seals on a leaking outside tap. Couldn't get the tap handle off as the screw holding it on had rusted. Spent about an hour and a half trying to free it, before SWMBO said "just go and get a new one". Took the hint and went to the plumbers' merchants and got a brand new tap for £2.38 + vat!!! An hour and a half sodding about for a two quid item, I must be nuts. :-[ :-[

- where do you get the replacement cells ?
- how do you solder them up (need a monster soldering iron?).
I opened up one of my dewalt batteries thinking the same but no way was my electronics soldering iron anyway close to melting the solder on the tabs.
