Thinking of getting one, anyone had one or any info of common problems?
-
Friend of mine had one, lovely car & pretty rapid, he had probs with water leaks affecting the electrics & screwing up the ECU, One of the 1st things I'd look for. Also suffered a bit from tinworm on the sills.

That depends on whether you're buying a new one (ha) or a really old one, surely?

It's going to be the new shape not the classic but per march 2001 because I don't want a £500 rfl bill ::)

You can go up to 2005 Pete, it changes for cars 2006 and onwards

what sort of mileage you looking ??

If its the Ford era one, the gearboxes are made of cheese, and ultimately not worth fixing. Front springs tend to snap. Build quality issues on Ford era ones.
When you unlock the car, the drivers seat moves all the way back, pissing off rear seat passengers.
Otherwise, a comfortable place to be, and fairly rapid.

I've looked at one with 51,000 miles on it. I've heard the nikasil bores can be a problem

Thank god for that ;D

How come - do you lock rear seat passengers in your car? :) :) That "feature" can easily be disabled ;)

The S-Type V8 aren't a bad car engine wise, the problem with the bores was only on the very early V8s (pre 1999), they are also known for tensioner problems so you want to make sure they have had the modified tensioners fittied as changing the timing chain in the S-Type involves removing the engine due to limited room, on the upside if the tensioners or chains do fail they tend not to bend valves so long as your not travelling at a pace. They are known for rear lower suspension arm bushes and shock absorber bushes, the seat moving back when opening the door is easily avoided by switching it off auto using the switch on the steering column cowling, the gearboxes on the later cars aren't as troublesome as the early cars, they are known for leaking from the sump and multi plug tube but those are easily sorted, the electronic handbrakes can also be troublesome on these, not a big job but fairly pricey. Also the pre 2001 cars are also known for excessive corrosion to the rear subframes.

Brilliant info cheers for that :y
Luckily I work for a company that sells genuine jaguar spares so I'll get a good discount.

Ooh.. hello there! ;) :-[ (Says the man who, at some point, may need a reasonable number of XJ40 bits.. ;D)

As said timing chains/tensioners a weak point.Ideally you want to see evidence that these have been changed for the uprated 4.2 litre ones.First tensioners were plastic which fell apart,Jaguar changed them later for plastic/metal ones, which fell apart.Percieved wisdom is that any engine with the Nicasil linings that has lasted thus far should be o.k.-it was the high sulphur content in the petrol at the time that caused the wear.Gearboxes I believe are the sealed for life type-they certainly were on the XJ from '97 on.I have also heard that the thermostat tower[plastic again]can get brittle with age and leak, alloy ones are available from the U.S.A.

Most of the later gearboxes are said to be sealed for life but the oil can still be changed anytime you like, just like any other box, just make sure LT ATF goes in.

The S type has very, very light, over assisted steering. It does take quite some getting used to.

Picked it up on Saturday and l'm very pleased with it, lots of car for the money just like the elite. One thing I will be changing is the exhaust, it stifles the sound of the V8 ::) ::)

Mine is a 01 S-Type with 80000 miles and I paid £1000 with 12 months not and 4 months tax. The STR will cost you quite a bit more but I've started saving :)
