Title: Manual Gearbox
Post by: Oak on 10 September 2014, 11:16:42
My omega is the 2000 2.2  16v saloon. It has a manual gearbox. Since yesterday I have not been able to use the reverse gear. All the other gears work fine. I have had the car for about 9 years and this is the first time that the reverse gear won't engage. Please does anyone know that is causing the problem and is there a fix for it? Many thanks.

Think you need to e more specific, whats it doing, or not doing, lever wont lift or engage, engages but doesn't fully click into gear, goes into gear and makes noises etc,

Thanks zirk. When you pull the lever down, it does not seem to engage and there is no noise.

Ok, so the lever is not actually getting into the reverse position?

Its worth popping the gaiter off to check the reverse interlock is operating correctly.

As Mark says, check the lower part of it is working, the Gaiter just pulls unclips off.

Also check the upper link to it, pull the Gear knob off (Gear Knob only), look down inside the stick there should be a long black plastic link that hooks onto a small pin, this is the link to the lower bit that engages / disengages the lower reverse lock when you lift the upper black release lever under the gear Knob.

Dont be tempted to pull the upper lever off, in case the link is still connected, your stretch it, and it will cease to work.

Thanks Zirk and Marks. I sent the car to the mechanic. They could not fix it and said they would be sending it to the gear specialist on Monday. I have been quoted between £162 and £246 for used gear box, but the mechanic said I should wait until he hears from the gear specialist.

Why do I think they'll fit another gearbox, when it sounds very much like the selector linkage? :-X :-X :-X

Think Shack has made a good point, i'd want to check the shifter first and if you are unable to check it yourself either get one of the Mobile guys on here to check for you or take it to a shop that have some idea of what they are talking about,

Heres a pic from EPC so you can see how the lever works
