Title: Auto Gearbox Question (AR35)
Post by: RolandL on 15 September 2014, 16:17:59
I am planning to change the gearbox fluid.  Both guides in maintenance section say to use Dextron 3.  However, when I contacted the local Vaux Dealer they said they have Dextron 3 in Semi and Fully synthetic, Which do I need Semi or Full .  My main engine oil changes are done with Semi Synth oil.  So I'm guessing I need Dextron 3 Semi, is that correct?   :-\

Any guidance gratefully received.

Roland.

PS They did suggest I use Dextron 6 (latest), but were unable to tell me whether it was Semi or Full   ::)

I used Carlube. It is also a semi synthetic. I personally would go with what the boys here say   ;)

From dealer its 'kin' expensive.

My own preference is for Fuch Titan 4000, but any old shite that meets DIII will do. Not a fan of the Coma stuff Hellfrauds sell, but that is convenient, and around £20 off the shelf.

Don't think Hellfrauds sell Comma ATF anymore.  :-\

Its no longer called DIII or AQ3, Comma call it something else, but the smallprint does mention DIII

My local stealer was doing semi-skimmed Dex111 for £42.95 per 20L on trade Club a few months ago. :y

In theory, any Dex III designated product will do. Dexron being a gm trademark product.

However as said, I can't bring myself to use that coma shite. IMO its worth seeking out a decent Dex 3 of which Fuchs Titan is one. Formerly silkolene.

Dealers don't tend to stock 3 ime. So want to sell you the latest ATF fluid that supersedes 3. While in theory that's all well and good, excluding the extortionate price, there are instances where newer dexron oils have caused issues.

So the tendency here is to stick with gm recommended oil at time of manufacture. Dexron III.

I'm not aware of any fully or semi synthetic Dex III oils. It's just Dex III afaik.

There are also suggestions that Dex 3 licenses ended in 2006. So poetic license could well creep in on cheaper products.
