Title: low oil level sensor
Post by: Andy B on 25 September 2014, 16:08:28
Does anyone know ... (Mark  ::)) for certain that changing the low oil level sensor is a straight forward job on my Merc R320? The sensor itself is about £40, but when asking generally about it at Mercedes, they want about £300 to change it!  :o :o :o

Their EPC isn't very clear and the lad on the parts wasn't allowed to look on their version of TIS to give me the heads up

Our Muppet seems to think they just bolt onto the sump but he's not certain.

I've yet to even venture under the car/tank, I'm not certain, but I the EPC suggested it was inside the sump  :-\ :-\ :-\

Which is about right considering their £300 quote  :-\

Quite straight forward then. Item 30 apparently  :-\

Give it a go, Andy ....... :y

If you don't f**k it up you'll have the satisfaction of a job well done and £300 still in your pocket. :y

I'll likely do it. Just wait a few thousand miles though & do it with a 'service'  :y

Apparently the sump doesn't pass the cross member without lifting the engine hence the 4 hour job & quote!  :(

Say what you like about old cars, but they were/are easy to work on.

Why do modern cars need to be so complicated? :-\

The huge ally sump of my Senator wouldn't paas the front cross member either but the level sensor was bolted to the side of it . . .it took minutes to change.

Mine's 'only' 80 litres so is around £100 to fill when the low fuel light comes on  :(

No dipstick means no way of checking...

Combine this with a display giving silly readings/messages and the risk of overfilling is quite high and the consequences of over filling get much more expensive than four hours of Mercedes time ::)

How stupid, or is this part of the trend to avoid any diy repairs, even for what should be a regular weekly check?.............. :-\ :-\

Mine does have a dipstick ..... that's how I know the sensor is incorrect when it tells me to check the level  ;)

Ah ok :y mine does too, which is nice... not that it uses any oil 8)

Wasn't sure if the V6 did or not :-\

Could it be that the sump is gunged up, clogging the sensor? ie would a flush or two sort it :-\
