hi chaps how often should the aux belt and tensioner be changed :y
-
Common practice is to change the belt and tensioner pulley at the same time as the cambelt :y
-
okay al i had that done bak in april, so i gues i should do that now or you should lol :y

;D the pulley is available separately, so no need to buy the whole tensioner unless it's weak :y
Easily checked if the belt is 'loose' with the engine running...
-
through experience - recommend you get GATES aux belt--lasts much longer than cheaper ones :y :y
-
how can you tell if its loose with engine running :-\

There will be a lot of vertical movement on the top run :y

Not advisable, check the Aux Belt Tensioner with a spanner with Engine Off, there normally nice and tight, its normally the plastic Pulley that fails and quickly when they do ;)

Sorry, should have been clearer... :-[ this is a simple visual check... any flapping/slapping and the belt is loose :y
-
there is no flapping or movement looks nice and tight do you think i should just replace the belt or just leave it until its starts to flap or stick whats your advice. i just dont want it to snap or something in middle of winter :'(
-
If the belt looks taught, then then only concern is the pulley :y
For what the pulley costs, change it, and as you have to remove the belt to change the pulley, you may as well pop a new belt on :y Especially if you have no idea when it was last changed :-\
-
okay al i will get the pulley and belt and give you a shout if you are okay to do that for me. and dont supose you have a link to the pulley have you as i have no idea what im looking for :y
-
Both cheap enough from VX :y and no probs :y
-
okay i will pay them a visit tomoz thanx :y

Pulley is available without the tensioner, so don't take any nonsense :y
-
okay i wont ;D

I can find no reference whatsoever to the 'aux belt' being changed on my Omega. There is certainly no mention of it being replaced with the cambelt.
So it looks like 90,000 miles and climbing.
Easy to change for a DIY imbecile such as myself?
What is the cost of a new one?
-
Too easy to speak of ::) pulley plus belt are in finland roughly 65€ (45£) so not too much!
-
Think my aux belt for a 2.2 was around £5 which i replaced when i did the Cam belt/pump etc.. But never thought to do Aux belt tensioner ::)

Only pulley required unless tensioner is donald :y Applies across the petrol range...

Really? ::)
I change those when they need changing ;)

Think the wording on the DVD was Aux belt and tensioner every second cambelt change. To be honest if you buy the SKF Auxbelt kit you get a brand new tensioner and pulley anyway so it's cheap enough to replace everything.

Would now be a good time to mention 80k belt intervals ::)

So I'm 10,000 miles overdue. What will happen if it breaks?

Alternator/charge light comes on, & if you carry on driving the high temp light comes on & eventually the heads warp! ;)

Yep, and or worse, my Ex managed to totally kill one of my V6 Plods within minutes and only a few miles when a loose Water Pump pulley cover threw the Belt. :'(
As for the Tensioner Pulley and Aux Belt, a spare of both gets carried in my Mobile Spares Kit, especially on long journeys, for the sake of a 10 min fix (5 min if you've done one before) and a 15mm Spanner vs the hassle of being stranded its a no brainer.
If the pulley gives up whilst driving at speed, it only takes minutes to self destruct and take the belt with it at the same time.
