Title: Swapping doors..
Post by: Terbs on 06 October 2014, 16:19:36
Hi all,

I have aquired a replacement rear door for the 2.5 Estate (Nocturno Blue) I think its from a CD model. The outside of the door is identical to my 'W' 2000 reg Elite. It is a complete door except for the card. All the wiring is there with the plugs. Will this be a straight swap, or will the wiring have to be changed. There are two wires in the middle of the door, which I assume are locking and window operation, and the loom sticking out the front of the door with a plug on it.

TIA :y

One last question, fellas....do you have to renew the pins that you knock out of the hinge, or do the old ones refit :y

The old pins will knock in, but they're not expensive to replace .... 50p each IIRC when I replaced some

Quite easy to do Tony. As said trolly jack with bit of 3x2 on top . I also used a length of foam pipe lagging along the bottom of the door for extra protection  ;)

Pins knock out really easy  . .  . used mole grips & small hammer to tap mine out. Have changed several doors now &never used new pins :-\

A second person to help is really essential  IMO    . . . you could do it by yourself  .  .but a lot easier with an assistant  :y

Yes, thanks Andy/Al...I carried the rear door in...it made my arris hang out. I'll get the trolley jack and son in law for the lifting side. Thinking about it, probably be sensible to take it to his garage and let him and his men fit it.  ;)

Removing rear door is easy. Undo the check strap, unplug connector at base of B pillar, close door, open relevant front door, knock pins out holding rear, lift handle and remove door. Seemples :) :)

Actually, thinking about it, whilst searching on this subject here, did I see that it's best to disconnect the battery....something to do with airbags. I never knew there were airbags in the doors, or does this reference the airbag in the steering wheel. ??? :-[

That's for your front doors, there are pressure sensors in them for the seat airbags. None in the back  :y

Are the airbags fitted to later models. I have just had a look at the front door that is going on after a strap repair, and I can't see any airbag in it. Apart from the small access areas for handle, window, etc, it is all sheet metal. ??? I think my Estate (2000 Wreg 2.5 Elite Estate) door is the same, if I remember correctly :)

Update....ah...sorry Andy, I misread...the bag is in the seat :-[

Seat air bags are from MFL onwards  ;) ;) ;)

I changed a rear door on mine at the weekend & it was fairly easy but I had my son helping, I don't think it would be practical without two pairs of hands.
The only problem I came across was missing wiring in the new door for the tweeter speaker, just meant using the wiring harness out of the old door.

A BIG thankyou to all who subscribed to this thread.. :y
I have to say, that RobG's post about shutting the door to remove the pins is first class. Did the whole job myself, with only swmbo replacing the pins as I lined the door up, and again, with it closed, popping in the pins was a doddle. :y
One point, and I assume this will apply to all models....Mole grips are great for the top pin, but could not use them on the lower pin, due to lack of space. Luckily I had a pair of those grips with the holes in that you adjust them with. Worked a treat :y

Thanks again, lads :y
