Title: Our Village on National News.
Post by: Vamps on 23 June 2008, 22:39:10
Unfortunately for the wrong reasons, >:(  A farmers wife has died and her son seriously injured after they intervened when they caught thieves stealing diesel from the farm tank. >:(
I don’t know them personally though all those interviewed, by the news crews, are well known to me.
Such a tragic turn of events for a few gallons of Diesel, my thoughts go with the family.
The farmer and his son chased a silver Mitsubishi pick up over the fields, the son got run over when he tried to stop the thieves, I hope they get him/them, the pick up will be damaged and the potential thieves must be localish.
I pass the farm twice a day at least, we live is a small community and these things just do not happen around here.

Yip .. thats terrible .. but a sign of the times I'm afraid .... :(

My place is also in the news for mostly horrible reasons, but the local ex-servicemen - of several organisations - have done a magnificent job, and whenever a repatriation of military casualties takes place, there is a "presence" of folks to pay their respects as the cortege passes through the town and past the War Memorial.

It used to be just 20-30 folks, but is now 200-300 and the road is closed to other traffic, it is turning into a mini-parade as an awful lot of folks wish to honour the fallen. Many shops close for about 30-45 minutes in respect.

It is exceedingly moving, but ... and I don't wish to denigrate what is being done ... what grips my s*** about it is the age of the folks who turn out in all weathers .... I doubt if anyone under 25 even bothers, and the "yoof" have been heard to complain that the road and shops are closed... :(

Just what is the world coming too.. one has to ask .. :(

A village was on the main news tonight that is close to me.

Treeton and Catcliffe

They were on about how they suffered with the floods last year.

Shame they didnt tell the truth.  They were actually scared of Ulley reservoir bursting its banks, so they pumped out millions of litres of water to stop it  happening.

Guess where it went.

Thats right.  Treeton

Terrible!  Just bloody terrible!  :'( :'( :'(

I was out with a police patrol on a Saturday night / Sunday morning shift and at one stage had to attend a farm where men had been seen "trying to steal" sheep, which the farmer reckoned was not unusual because of the values involved.  However, diesel can now be worth more, but it cannot be considered worth more than a life! :o :'(

Yes Mike, and my body clock has just started to adjust back to day light!  ;D ;)

As for what I was doing, I am a civilian carrying out some functions for Kent Police, which has given me the opportunity to go out on patrol to learn the procedures and the "ups and downs" of modern policing. Very interesting and enjoyable!   :y:y

2.0 is more economical around town, but 2.5/3.0 on a run will do about 33 ish which is all the 2.0 will give back too.

I agree Dazzler :y I have just completed a round 250 mile trip to Thatcham (Berkshire) and back to Ashford (Kent) using the M20, M26, M25, M4 and A4.  Often travelling at 90-100, and on one long (emptyish) stretch of M20 at 130 mph. I averaged 65 mph for the total journey, and my 2.5 V6 was 'well used' but still returned 32mpg overall.

I certainly would always go for either a 2.5/6 or 3.0/2 out of choice.  It is affordable  (my 1.6GL Toyota Estate was averaging 25 mpg when on a similar (maximum 120 mph) run. :y

My local radio (Cambridge shire) was only talking about this a week or so back warning farmers and haulage firms to be carefull, apparently diesel (red) used to be a few gallons here and there but now its up too 100 plus gallons in one hit....the presenter was questioning how on hell could they physical carry that much.

Seems like some people will do as they please with no thought for others or the tragic out come.....id say it will only get worse with prices going the way they are,and certain types within our communities (Not suggesting pikey travelers honest) who would rather steal from others than actually part with there own money.

Im sure the Traveling community wouldn't do such a terrible thing as steal someones property and then high tail it with no regard for the injured person....... ::)

Id like too see farmers allowed too shoot these people on sight.....lets face it your hardly likely too wander onto a farm at silly o"clock in the morning in a pick up.

Ssssshhhhhhoosh! But, ah yes, I was practicing for going out with the police! ;D :-[ :-[ :-[

No on a very serious note I should add that although I love driving fast, but only when it is safe to do so, and only on virtually empty motorways, I have slowed down a lot compared to my younger driving years.  Indeed, with my voluntary work around the Police I have recognised the absolute need for safety when driving at a fair pace, and I am often now more in the habit of always sticking to speed limits.  I always did in residential areas, believing there should be far more 20 mph limits around schools in particular, but now even on motorways I mostly stick to the 80 - 90 zone.  It is only when the opportunity of a clear motorway transpires that I go a bit faster still.  No one but a highly trained Police driver should attempt the speeds they have to do in built up areas answering 999 calls, which I have witnessed them doing but always with public (& their!) safety in mind.   Frankly it has even made me think seriously about speeding even along motorways.  On Sunday morning I actually drove all the way back at 70 mph on the motorway!!  Maybe I will soon be a Lizzie Slow!! :o :o :o :o

Saw this on the news last night, it's shocking, I really feel for the family involved.

It seems trucks are having Diesel stolen as well when parked up in lay-bys and the scroats just punch a hole in the tank as it's quicker.

Things are really getting out of control now.

This is the root of the problem. People in society these days are out to help themselves with no thought for others and no sense of community.

Sadly even we have the same problem over here. Being a remote rural enviorment LPG gas and oil are the only real choices of heating fuel.
I run a property maintenance and keyholding service for owners of houses that are not permanently lived in and have had three properties where the 47Kg gas bottles have been stolen .These are costing about £70 each ( 180 euro a pair )to replace and some homes have four so it's quite costly.
Re oil, there is no economical method of securing the plastic oil tanks used extensivly over here ,the thieves just uncouple the oulet pipe and take what they want ,if they have no spanners they just pierce a hole in the casing and allow the remainder to spill on to the ground.
I heard on BBC  this morning that the leader of OPEC announced that oil prices will never come down so it looks like this will only get worse.  :(

There is defiantely an undercurrent of discontent

Some of thse old farmers over here would shoot them feed them to their pigs or bury them where they would NEVER be found.
A chap I know told me  that he was asked if he would bury a '06 Landcruiser on his mountain farm but he couldn't see inside when he did it. He was offered a lot of money to do it.   I believe him.

if caught they will probably get sentenced to a few years in side and be let out in even less time due to overcrowding/good behaviour.a few weeks ago the home secreatary instructed prisons to release over 700 prisoners early ,and told them that failure to comply would constitute unlawful imprisonment. >:( >:( >:(............there is little incentive not to commit serious crime these days.

Just spotted this:

"A Durham Police spokesman said: "A 21-year-old local man was arrested by police after a car was stopped on the outskirts of Coundon. The suspect, a passenger in the car, was arrested on suspicion of assault, theft, and theft of a motor vehicle. The man is currently being held at Bishop Auckland police station for questioning."

Earlier, police revealed they had found the thieves' battered getaway truck. The silver Mitsubishi L200 "Animal" pick-up was discovered burnt out on remote land on Monday night around 10 miles from where Mrs Dove died."
