Electric cars have a similar, but much higher, hurdle to LPG. Until there is sufficient availability of park/recharge points then there will be no significant take-up making it hard to find the capital to put in park/recharge points. At least with LPG is was possible to use it in dual-fuel setups allowing the option to switch back to petrol if you couldn't find the LPG.
Current electric vehicles can't afford the weight of a standby 'other' fuel severely limiting usability, and hybrids like Lexus with a petrol/LPG engine providing the volts for the leccie motors on the wheels may be the closest we get for some time yet.

That did look fun ;D However, until our government gives some direction and long-term commitment to encouraging new technologies we'll just carry on as we are are. (which will suit Darling's budget just nicely)
Despite what the nut munchers might think the absence of an exhaust pipe doesn't make electric cars clean. The emissions are coming from a power station instead, and given that the majority of ours are ageing fossil fuelled plants, nothing is gained.
However, one thing that we do need, and will need in greater volumes in future, is storage for off-peak energy and a countrywide fleet of cars charging overnight could help in that respect.
As said, though, until you can stop and charge it somewhere it's a (rather expensive) choccy teapot.

Didnt actually mean it to become a serious thread.
Most electric or duel power cars so far have been boring. So given the choice of the Electric Atom or a Tractor to save on running costs I know what my choice would be.
My appologies for not making my point a little more obvious
My trip to work used to be 8.2 miles, I had 3 different choices of route.
Dual Carriageway/motorway,
B Roads/Dual Carriageway.
or
All country roads with a village in the middle.
The thought of charging an Aerial Atom and seeing if I could beat my record to work at 6am every morning would have actually been a good enough challenge to make sure I was actaully there on time every day. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Ah.....THAT sort of 'would you use?' question...
Would love to go up/down the M27 in that Solar powered car from the race in Aus, but other than that I would enjoy the challenge of putting something together with a Aluminium/Fibreglass shell to look like some big lump just to turn heads when you couldn't hear it coming. Could have some great fun along those lines, Imagine taking some boy-racer's big exhaust hot hatch and turning it electric....would freak them out whether you went past them or they went past you.

Electric cars are getting better all the time. There are some new Lithium batteries that claim about 10,000 recharge cycles. That could last for 30years!, and still be usable at the end.

The jeep would get me to/from work easily, and if you had a trailer with a small generator in it, you could go for a long distance. A lot of major car manufacturers, GM inc, recon they will have offerings out in 2010. And as has been already said, just watch the power grid sag, and the headless chickens in whitehall trying to meet a demand they should have forseen decades ago!.

I used to use an electric vehicle for work.
It had numerous batteries,did about 23mph,and carried about 400 gallons of milk.
