Apologies for the plethora of threads lately... i do clearly think too much.
However do need some help here.
I am almost birthday bear. As i mentioned sometime ago i am getting a welder. Well i also need a welding mask.
i assumed it would be easy. It's a mine field :(
Can anyone post a linky to a nice, sensibly priced, functional ,ask with the necesary protection required when mig welding :)
thanks :)

*mask even ::)

There £59 one has a very good quality ESAB cassette in it.

cheers boyos :):):)
-
Got mine on the fleebay. £24 auto darkening. With flames n skulls all over. :y
-
Lol, I have one of the cheap ebay ones as well, if your only doing a bit of work they are fine but, the better ones give much less eye strain if your doing longer welding runs. :y
-
Hmmm.
I wont be doing it that much. But initially ill prob be practising as much as poss.
i may just spend the £60-ish squid and then its good for ages innit :)
-
Just short runs in doing and plug welding. Might get a dear one if I'm doing loads.
-
plug welding?
im not up with the terms. :(
if i want to weld a piece of metal to another ill stick them together with no gap, weld, when it pools up in the viser move steadily across.
is plug weld the same as a tack weld (i.e. juist a ''spot'' of weld)?
-
Nope, plug welding you drill a hole in one sheet and place it over the other. Weld to the base sheet through the hole and build the weld pool up to 'plug' the hole and work the weld into the top sheet around the inner edge of the drilled hole.

Got ya. cheers mark :)
thing is this looks all practise. ive had a go so ROUGHLY know what im doing. will need help setting the welder up though.
with my first ever weld i burned right through the metal :o on the next it was ok :)
-
What scares me with the auto-darkening ones is the thought of one day the lens not going dark and me sending myself blind.. :-[
-
I find no worthwhile difference between the cheap and expensive ones until you damage one. Treading on a £50 helmet is better than a £150 one!
My recommendations are: one that fits your head closely but is still comfortable; has as large a viewing window as possible; and has a decent range of adjustment (down to grade 9). Using a large, square helmet under a car or when welding sills etc is a nuisance, whereas a smaller closefitting one lets you get closer to the work. A large window/screen just gives you a better view. Using a lighter shade makes it much easier to see what you are doing, and won't be a problem at the low power settings used on sheetmetal. Actually being able to see what you are doing is the easiest way to improve your welding.
£60 should cover all of that, I bought mine from Welder's Warehouse.
-
Yea always a scary thought. Not good when you get a flash off a welder.
-
You mean these welding masks arent supposed to trap your ears and pull chunks of your hair out when you use one?
Learn something new every day. Might have to spend more than a tenner.
-
Cheers lads :)
-
Can someone just remind me (as a rough idea) what settings i should have my basic welder set to to weld say 1mm, 3mm and 5mm together? presumably i have to turn the ''wire speed'' down to accomodate the thinner / thicker metal? :)
Really cant wait lads - excited bear :):):)
-
Depends on the welder mate. My sip could weld 1mm on very low but others might not on low. All to do with machine and individual. Practise is best mate.
-
Thanks DB.
Presumably i can play with the settings? and use what welds best?
Also, if im easily burning through some metal i can simply turn it down??? :)
-
Start on the lowest and slowest. On a 1mm steel panel I have it on the lowest and midway with speed. If you try that and its splatters turn down to suit. But if welding 1mm to 2mm then more power needed
And yes you can play with the settings you wont break it
-
Cheers davie :y
-
Most of the problems I've seen (and had) welding sheetmetal have been cured by increasing the wirefeed and power, so I start high and turn the machine down. This is particularly applicable to small machines which have weak wirefeed.
-
Thanks nick. With it being set at highest initially am I not just going to burn through straight away? Thus starting off on lowest is best?
-
:o
-
Once you pull the trigger on full power it will blow holes. Then decrease power until it stops :y
There are loads of welders with poor wire feeds. But there is lots of help to overcome it.

Just get a helmet you can afford webby. The ones on ebay at £24 automatic. Work well for being cheaper. Never had a flash and I been using it a while. You got a welder then?

Ps, i hav been watching loads of vids (excited bear) :):):)
is it better to ''push'' or ''pull'' the weld? couldnt really understand the difference other than one looked slightly thinner?
-
Whatever tickles mate. Whatever feels comfy for you

Whatever fits the job best.
-
Cheers Nick.
Cant wait to give it a go :):):)
-
You should pull the weld with MIG as this means the shield gas is blowing over towards the now cooling weld pool which minimises oxidation

:y
Do i also hold the nozzle at an angle or straight down? :)
-
A slight angle......or you wont be able to observe the weld pool to control your welding. :y

bloody cant wait. ooooh what to weld first|! :D
