Uninterruptable Power Supply. A box of batteries that is inline from the mains but before the equipment so should the mains fail the UPS will provide a limited power supply to the equipment.

so do you have to change the batteries then?

cause in our house we struggle to find batteries and ones I do find are usually dead anyway ;D

The batteries are more like motorcycle battery size and are charged via the mains input. All depends how much equipment is plugged in as to how long the unit will stay up without mains.

And how old the batteries are  :-[

40 mins isn't really long enough for the system to shut down.

Parachute failed to kick in, which is a tad concerning. Everything had to fsck, extending the outage. *sigh*.

Actual outage was from around 7:15 to about 8:15, apologies for the inconvenience

Good lord.. how slow is the system and what does it have to do that takes 40 mins!? :o Even my tiny Atom powered NASs with all the stuff they're lumbered with, or the little AMD N36L system can spin down in less than five..
