Title: Heater woes....
Post by: Terbs on 08 November 2014, 13:37:15
Hi all....

A few weeks ago some numty :-[ never tightened the header tank cap, and on the way to Dorset, we lost our water. :(

Filled up and been using the car, but yesterday swmbo moaned that the heater was blowing cold.
I have read Hotel21's piece on 'Self Bleed'. Been outside for two hours...seems to get hot, air coming out, but after what seems like an eon, the water bubbles like a cauldron and then goes out faster than I can fill it. Had three attempts, and heater then seemed to be quite hot. So went for a run, got back and the heater is cold again. >:(
Temperature gauge reads 85 to 90 degrees.
Am I doing something wrong ?????

Refill it 50/50.
Refit cap.
Start engine.
Set heater temp to max, with fan on minimum.
Take for a spirited 20 minute drive.
Switch off.
Allow to cool.
Top up coolant.

Repeat.

Should then be fine :y

Anytime the system is emptied, when refilling there will be an amount of air left in the system.

Through use, the system will expel air to the header tank. It is a self bleeding system.

Without fail, the system will then need topping up, but after its cooled as the system is also pressurised to prevent boiling. So next time you use the car, check the system and re fill.

Effectively exactly as Al says. :y

Or bring it round next time you're up. Mrs Terbert has every right to be somewhat annoyed at having no heat ;D

That's a kind offer of you TB. I may well visit you, but I am in Sir Tigger Land till the 30th November.

Using the 2.6 down here, so the 2.5 will be as is now. :y
