hg went last tuesday,started to strip it down thursday evening,and finally got the head off saturday morning,head gasket failed on pot 4 and after looking at gasket it had failed where the metal ring was,luckily oil and water didnt mix,new timing belt kit arrived friday,and gaskets will be picked up tuesday,just need to order water pump and angle gauge,will be refitting it over several evenings next week and on saturday,when me and webby removed head bolts they wasnt very tight,so thinking when it was done last time it wasnt torqued down properly,heres some pics.

most of them felt medium tight.... nowhere near what I'd expect of head bolts. the worst one was on the O/S and was hardly done up at all!!! :o
Worth noting that all that mess is mud from off roading..... not hg explosion mess ;D

It was like that on No 6 when my Senator's head gasket went - it looked like new in there. :y

No need to do that,doesnt burn oil,and i dont have the time to go that mad on it as i need it back on the road by saturday evening.

Whilst you have the head off and the cams out, you could change the inlet cam for a 'H' cam from another X20... Gives a little more BHP over standard and running becomes a little bit better on the fuel consumption... but not by much LOL
This conversion is the equivalent to installing 'G' cams in a V6 ;)

+1 on that . I'd always check an alloy head for true when the HG has failed even more so if you suspect that it wasn't torqued down correctly prior to the failure .

loadsa room in the bay to work in. as opposed the the omega where you scratch up your hands on everything :'(

When its down to heads off like it is in the photos..... i trust all youd need to do to remove the engine would be strap it up to your hoist, undo bell housing bolts and undo engine mounts and lift out????

Waterpump fitted,rear timing cover fitted and timing pulleys and tensioner fitted,nearly done ;D

All serms ok,went to bedford last night,no leaks,runs fine,checked coolant this afternoon and just needed topping up,so far so good :y

After a week of running the truck,i wasnt happy with how the exhaust sounded under heavy acceleration,the only thing i changed was the manifold gasket,it was the double thickness type that came in the hg set,so tonight i removed the manifold,changed gasket for the old 1 and now sounds alot better.

There are a number of parts that are crap in these pattern gasket sets which include:
The cam seals (the original ones are more reliable despite potentially being 10 plus years old with many hours of use on them)
The cam cover seals
The manifold gaskets
Biggest issue with the manifold gaskets is they still provide crappy composite ones which Vx stopped using in the 90's where as the latest ones are metal multilayer jobs and much better.

Head gaskets are often Payen or Elring so ok, its the extras that tend to be naff.
All from personal experience :y
Hence why I always post a list of preferences every time someone enquires as to 'which kit'

Head gasket has got to be better than the old 1 ;D
