Title: Omega rear wiper .. saloon
Post by: omega3000 on 15 November 2014, 19:28:27
Has anyone fitted one ? Rear window gets covered in crap , was wondering if anyone thinks the same as me thinking it needs a rear wiper  :-\

I was thinking the same thing the other day and would also like to know if anyone has done it or attempted to do it.. :y

The shape of the screen will make it hard. It would have to be mounted on the glass, and all the issues associated with that.

Is it that much of a problem? If so, sell it and but a 1980s Orion ;D

Use some Rain-X, and the problem will be solved!
There are some euro spec police cars, Omega's and Volvo S60's that have had a rear wiper conversion. They do look peculiar  ;D

Certainly I agree with that, and I really notice it as I use the TD Estate as my Daily Driver, and only use the saloon rarely. I find the only way is to use a screen scraper on it before start of the day's use. Airflow then tends to keep it clear. :y

If proper 3 box saloons needed a rear screen wiper, maufacturers would have fitted them years ago. With a very few exceptions, they haven't been fitted with them ...... they don't need them. An estate & hatchback chuck crap up from the road but a saloon doesn't.

I've seen Mondeo Saloons (MKII) with rear wipers.  Glass mounted.

whats wrong with wanting to fit a rear wiper...its just different, after all there are many on here that have upgraded their cars to look better and to be a little bit different..nothing wrong with that is there  :y :y

Theoretically this shouldn't be too hard; a hatchback type wiper motor/arm and an Omega estate wiper stalk and you're done.
In practice, its functionally will be limited due to a small swept area and you will have to sort out a way of boring a 20mm(ish) hole through a toughened screen. Good luck with that! And it will look really odd, even if you make a tidy job of hiding the mechanism.

Not to mention completely redesigning the strengthening beam across the base of the rear window... ::)

If you have regularly used a car with rear wiper, estate, hatch, van etc the first thing you notice when you drive a saloon is that you miss the rear wiper, even a quick wipe to move all the damp / water / crap etc, agreed not needed when on the go. These wetter days the first thing I do is switch on the rear demist, even if not misty, as it helps to clear an excess water on the outside; even swmbo agrees with me as we are both in the same boat now, not an estate between us.......... :( ::) ::) ;)

Totally agree with vamps comments about the rear window thus the rear wiper question as it is the misty dampness on the outside that is the problem..so i guess its back to the quick wipe with the sponge before I get in the car......tut tut  I am such a lazy old git.. :D :D :D

So what next EMD?

You've got your rear wash wipe.
You've got your air freshener.

Any other aspirations?

The new skoda octavia saloon has a rear screen wiper - spotted one parked on a driveway when out walking the dog a few weeks ago and thought it looked a bit odd but only because it's not the norm - as I drive a Merc coupe I would love to have the ability to clear the rear screen especially when the car is in slow traffic and it's raining.

To what degree are you expecting to see out of the back window? Surely you want to see whether there is owt behind you, not to be able to give a detailed description of car & driver  :-\.

There's no wiper on my rear engined, Mercedes powered coupe  (Smart Roadster Coupe) but even if there was, you can still see bugger all cos the designer put a bloody great panel in your sight line.

It's not a proper van if it has rear windows!  ;D

It's a fair point.  You only really need to see enough to see if the following car has blue lights.  ::)  ;D

I think that's why the rules / regs on tinting car windows means you're basically allowed as dark as you like aft of the B-pillar - but only a small amount of tint on front side windows, and windscreen... because vans don't have windows there, and yet they're allowed on the roads. (some would say they shouldn't be, but that's more down to the drivers than the van  ;) ;D )

That's arse backwards... the front windows must legally only be tinted slightly in order that the driver can see out of them clearly at night...

As for rearward view, a car with blacked out windows and no passenger door mirror would be an mot failure, in the same way that a van with no passenger mirror would be ::)

sorry but, um.....

https://www.gov.uk/tinted-vehicle-window-rules

and the important bit - "There are no rules for tinting the rear windscreen or rear passenger windows"

This is what I was saying, yes, the front windows - that is windscreen, and front side windows must only be tinted slightly, but the back side and rear windows can be dark as you like. Limousines, for example.. lots of MPVs you see now from factory have this option...

The arse backwards bit was simply that you put the cart before the horse... rear windows are irrelevant but not because vans don't have them ::)

As for having limo tint windows, I never knew that... No, really ::)
