Title: Ignition Jamb
Post by: robson on 20 November 2014, 15:10:07
My ignition barrel  locked today. After putting key in and out several times and wiggling the sterring wheel it released and now seems ok. Is the barrel on the way out. If so I assume that main dealer can supply suitable barrel matched to my key.

You need some time and a little tiny bit of oil or grease if i remember correctly. Look on the how to guides and you'll find how to strip your barrel down, clean and lubricate it, then you'll be good for another 15 years  :y

I do lubricate the barrel with graphite powder from time to time.

Well if you're confident it is not a lubrication issue, then I do believe I read somewhere it's perfectly possible to build your own lock, from old , stripped down other locks, matched to your key - thus saving the fairly extensive expense from Vx

Whether you strip and clean the cylinder, or buy a new one do it now while it's still working. As this is a common fault, my preference would be for new.

You could swop ignition and glove box lock barrels, but it means taking out the glove box which is boring. Just follow the maintenance guide and clean up the ignition lock, it's fun, and a job you can do on the kitchen table.

I'm not sure there are the same number of sliders/blades in the g/box and ignition :-\.

I recently bought a kit to build up an entire new barrel to match the existing key, it was a fiddle but quite enjoyable. It was £24 from these guys but Im sure any decent lockshop can supply the kit.
