Title: Interesting (NB: only if you find cambelt timing interesting)

Some slightly Heath Robinson ideas, plus a reference to the Vauxhall V6 (in C25XE form)

Don't let Anthony in Madrid see this! His V6 cambelt is due. :o

I have more than a suspicion that quite a few garages would do the job something like that. Blobs of tippex, mole grips , big screw driver.

The worrying thing is that some might see that pic and think that it's a good idea :-\

It isn't, not becuase the cam sprockets might distort, but rather that they could crack or shatter due to being sintered rather than machined :y

Better to wait a few days for a purchased/borrowed kit to arrive than faffarse about trying to bodge it imho :-\

Using the correct kit costs no more in time, and saves you a small fortune against doing it as a bodge if it all goes Pete Tong :y

Guys.... I've just shattered my cam sprockets when I put the mole grips on....

Does anyone have any more mole grips?

Far from ideal, but look at it as an equivelant to the paper clip test or pedal trick. In the absence of tech 2 ( or a cam belt locking kit ) whatchagonado?

The paper clip test, pedal trick, marks on the back of the cam belt cover are all in place to allow service, of sorts, in the absence of the proper factory service tools. Third world countries and get me out of the smelly stuff repairs don't always mean the correct tools are to hand.

That's not to say clamping with mole grips us a good idea though, obviously. :-X :o

Well... if the cam sprockets are abundant, then... what's the worst that can happen...? if for arguments sake I do clamp them with mole grips, and do happen to shatter or deform on., it's only a day or two waiting for a new one to be posted from a fellow OOFer..  :)

Still not saying I'm going to do it this way, mind... just find it intriguing what results you can get from not using the 'proper' tools.  :y

The fact that the pullies are sintered and therefore relatively brittle was brought to light in a conversation about changing four pot cambelts at Newent... :y
