Hi guys, has anyone ever tried to replace a windscreen? I know it takes two people due to the size of it but can it be done at home?
Last week a stone chip made a really small crack, few mm wide, till next morning it was some 10 inches wide. I could be covered by insurance if.....well you know....I payed a few quids more when doing the registration but I didn't >:( , yes I'm a stingy one. Now I found a spare windscreen for 50e and I would like to know if it's worth the work replacing includes. Thanks guys

Will the supplier of the second hand screen not fit it for you :-\
The removal tools are readily available, usually cheaply which will save you trying to cut the old one out with a pocket knife.
Easy enough to do single handed, but two people makes lifting the screen over the car a much easier task :y

Thank you both for answers and the link. As for fitting it onto the miggy, which sikaflex should I use? I've been searching for item but couldn't find one thou I know there was sika product for car windscreen too.

And one more sorry , are omega windscreens all the same across the range? :-[

Sikaflex EBT should do :y
As for screens, they're all the same shape :y
Variations are:
Standard with blue tinted band
Standard with blue tinted band and rain sensor
Heat reflective
Heat reflective with rain sensor
But any Omega B screen will work...

Most professional windscreen replacers work alone :o

This is good timing, as I will have to attempt the same myself (insured, but I'm hoping to repair some rust around my screen, so can't really say to Mr Autoglass 2can you take the screen out, then come back in a week, please?")
really glad it's not as hard as it seems.
Doesn't he need a new seal/trim strip, normally only available brand new, or can you use the old one?

ok.. cutting the insulation with a steel rope and cleaning can be done alone.. but positioning the windcsreen perfectly on a fresh insulator at one go alone is beyond my understanding ..its big and heavy and f you move it you will damage the insulation.. with the help of a vertical hanger/setup may be :-\

A guy I know has said that putting them in is dead easy, and you've got time to give it a little move here and there if you need.. Not disagreeing with you, cem, I've never done one myself, so really can't say either way; and the £1 shop suction grabber jobbies are meant to be perfect for lifting and positioning the screen. That's my knowledge exhausted. :)
Would really like to know if this is or isn't a DIY and Do it at Home job, or not, as I need mine replacing, following this thread with interest...

Bloke who came out to do my old elite front screen let me prep and rust treat the surround before he fitted the screen :y

Ahh :y - well this is what I'd like to happen - I just have an image of it all being dependant on the sort of guy, you know? I might get one who says 'yerr, I'm down this way later in the week, I'll pop it in then' on the other hand 'I'm sorry, paragraph 5 subsection c, of the Autoglass Code of Conduct Rulebook clearly states blah blah blah'

Funny you should say that , fitter said oh if there is rust we recommend it to be sent to a repair shop before we can fit it really ::) he said if it was my car with that rust around the edge may as well scrap the car >:( Soon put him in his place and got the sander out ;D :D

Ohh, good stuff - I'm glad they take that attitude - well, the first bit anyway...
My mechanic mate, who has worked on Omegas, and Carltons and Sennys before, when they were brand new, and services all the taxis in the town made me very sad... When I told him about my V6, and getting her back on the road, and I'm going to do this and that - Bilstein B4s, new wishbones, blitzing the underneath, stripping back underseal, curing rust etc.. He said "Well yeah.. but, well, I don't know why you're bothering.. I mean it's just an old car"
