Title: Knocking noise at rear
Post by: m.ian on 27 November 2014, 10:36:37
As per title have knocking noise when going over uneven road surface from the back of the estate, near side I think.
Have checked exhaust and all seems well with that, so what could it be?

Heat shields?

Broken spring?

Knackered (reeeeeeally knackered) donut bushes ?

Top shock mount? Could remove the cover and get an assistant to check the top mount while driving?

Most knocks at the rear are or seem to be exhaust related ime...?

The rear most exhaust hangers have a nasty habit of working loose which in turn allows the back box to flap around...

There's also a potential contract point where the exhaust passes the wheel tub/chassis rail seam iirc :y

Also, if the shock mounts are loose, you only need to lift the carpet in the boot to check :y there are two small steel plates held down by four screws. If the top mount has failed these will have had the shit kicked out of them... expect dents or holes if this s the case...

I'm on my 3rd estate in a row and everyone has broke a rear spring  :(
Jack the back end up and sit it on 2 axel stands.
Get a bar in there or get someone to stand on the wheel to force it down a little.
If you get underneath, you can get a good look at the spring  :y
Favourite place is about 6 inches round from the bottom where the pigtail meets the main part of the coil  ;)
Don't put your fingers in there because it will bite  :-X

Thanks for all the suggestions and yet after checking over all the above found that the S/L adjustment arm had stuck and the car was lower than normal !
Freed it then sprayed it all with white spray grease and now all is well  :y :y :y :y

Knocking noise on the back of my estate is coming from the reflectors rattling in the back bumper. Another one for the "one day" list  :P
