Title: Vauxhall Viva returning.
Post by: 2boxerdogs on 08 December 2014, 11:54:14
Saw in the Sunday Mirror that the Viva is coming back soon 1.0 city car picture looked very similar to Corsa. Was thinking of leasing a car for the wife in place of her 2.2 estate, was considering the VW UP, but would rather stay with VX so one these could be next.We have had a VW Polo in the past good car but our local dealership is not too good , whereas our VX is excellent, should be about similar cost about £90.00 per month on a 48 month contract.

No, and it won't have a carburetor, a dynamo, distributor, or wind up windows, but it will have a radio and no rust after three years!! ;D ;D ;D ;)

Is it a biological sign of getting old when you stop liking how new cars out look?

Sorry, but this looks badly proportioned and actually dated... doesn't look any more modern than the Agila - and that's just about to be axed  :-[

Actually, from a marketing viewpoint, I'm surprised. The Adam was introduced as a way of cashing in on the likes of Mini, 500, DS3 with their customised bling; all using names from the past to give that retro appeal. So Vauxhall decide to introduce the Adam, named after Opel's founder... a missed opportunity to call the Vauxhall version Alex... but never mind. But - why not have called the Adam the Viva? Adam or Steve or Egbert would have suited this new thing better.

Personally love a light, simple, functional, cheap car. No frills, straighforward. But that being the case such as the Up! does is so much better. Simple, no-fuss. Why does this look like they've tried to force too much style on a little platform?

As I say, want to know if it's a sign of getting old? I remember people 10, 20 years older looking at cars when I was a kid, that I thought stunning, beautifully resolved designs, but them suggesting a 'proper car' from their youth that looked so much better than this etc...

Viva. Huh, I went around Europe in 1980 in a Viva HC 1160cc. Great experience but gutless car that had an intermittent misfire(throttle spindle warn) the minute we landed on foreign soil. Oh and the radiator sprang a leak on day two. Fixed that with the egg trick which I didn't believe would work. It did for 3000 miles. Only redeeming feature was the brakes but they caught fire in the Alps.

Nothing wrong with recycling names . Lets have a Viscount rear wheel drive with a V8.

I'd accept a rebadged Holden/Chevrolet on that basis... they did an estate too iirc :-\

The viva will just take sales away from the adam and the corsa. I thought GM would have learned this lesson when they replicated the zafira, mocca and antara with orlando, trax and captiva.

Its BMC / BL all over again - competing cars from the same company - so the 'idea' is to make each department make theirs a bit worse, so as not to take sales from the other one... only downside is, other car marques are not so hampered, you only encourage people to not buy any of your products, in favour of the competition.

Why attach memories of an utterly awfull car to a brand new one?

....it actually looks quite good imo. I wonder if they do a size 12?

I am at the stage now that I don't care what they call it, just need to get something smaller for pottering around town in. The 2.2 auto is fine on a run 33mpg but in town around 19 so we feel we ought to have something sensible, got the 4x4 for the caravan towing & my 2.6 hopefully will go on forever !! Never used on short runs & always 30 mpg & is in superb nick.

Well... the original Viva was so awful that when they introduced the Chevette to replace it, which was the same recipe, but with more modern styling, and a hatchback to boot (no pun intended) they couldn't get rid of the Viva, too many people were buying them. (and a British car company making lots of cars was a rarity in the mid-70s) it ended up selling in droves for another 4 years  :y The Bedford Vivavan - based on the 1963 HA lasted until 1983  :)

I like Vivas, and they shall be defended on this forum  :y First car I worked on, aged 3  :D

I remember a boy from school beaming with pride because his dad had just bought a brand new  1967 Viva SL90.

Good point Chris.  I feared my first company car could have been a Viva, but thank God they adopted an all Ford buying policy and I had a brand new Ford Escort Mk1.  I was so pleased and relieved; the Ford had true street cred in the days of the Ford Escort Mexico and other Cortina rally cars, but Viva's.....................................................no young person wanted one of them out of choice!! :o :o :o ;D ;D ;D

At one point I hankered after a Viva GT. The one  with the 2 litre engine.

All came with a 'sporty' matt black bonnet, if memory serves.

2.3 Magnum or a droop snoot Firenza would have been my weapons of choice :y

Worth a bob or two, I'll wager.

Any colour you like as long as it's silver.

Nostalgia implies some sort of affection/quality. To a viva ? Are you tripping again? Utterly appalling pile of shite.

Guy down the road from me has a tidy HB Viva sitting on his drive.

Many years ago one of my neighbours ran Viva's for his motoring school cars - clutches never seemed to last long - we used to be able to swap a clutch, on his drive, in around 30 minutes.

The name viva is quite good but Viva's were not good at all in fact that name brings back memories of horrible nasty rusty viva's, plastic seats, sloped dash, shinny rimmed/ribbed steering wheels. (my first car was a Magnum, marginally less crap than a viva but significantly worse than most other cars at the time)

I think it was the winter of 1963, One of our rural neighbours got his six month old Viva stuck in a drift. That precipitated us being snowed in for three weeks once snow ploughs couldn't operate.

The Viva when liberated rusted very quickly, might just have been a coincidence.

I think people are blurring things a bit, probably me included - if it were a rebuilt 'Eagle E Type' affair, that would be one thing, an actual replica reintroduced - but it's not, it's a piece of made in Korean/wherever plastic near-disposable automobilia, in the mould of Daewoos / small Kias, Daihatsu etc.. . they're trying to capitalise on a gap in Ford's armour, and good on them. But frankly, I'm not so sure that anyone will care either way whether there was or wasn't a Vauxhall 40 years ago with the same name. For those who remember/aware of the car the reaction will be 'Ohh, that's an old Vauxhall name!' (for good for bad, opinions are like genitals, we all have them, but don't like them all  ::) ) but for I'm sure 80% of the buying public won't care. Personally I think they should have capitalised on it, and used the rich heritage of one of Luton's best selling cars ever, same as Fiat 500, Mini etc.. but they've got the copyright on a name, and they're using it.

Plenty of car names people don't realise is an old reused name, I'm just thinking - Lancia Beta, Skoda Octavia, Cavalier Diplomat, even the 'VXR' range is a sublte hark back to the VX 490 and VX1800 / VX2300 ranges of the 60s and 70s. But no play (that I can recall) has been made of the link between the modern and older versions of of them. I wonder now if names like Magnum/Signum, Victor/Vectra, Viva/Vivaro, Cavalier Calibre/Calibra are purely coincidental? The Astra Sport hatch is a conscious Luton decision, as there was a Cavalier and a Magnum Sportshatch in the 70s.

Interestingly, when they launched the Vauxhall Velox in the 50s, they showed publicity shots of the 1920s E-Type 30-98 Vauxhall with 'Velox' bodywork, as it's spiritual ancestor  :y

History lesson over, you can all go back to chucking rubbers at each other while my back is turned.  :y
