A group of MP's have been looking into air pollution in our cities. Amongst other things, they have suggested a scrappage scheme for older diesels. IIRC, last time it was about £2000 off a new car. Just saying.

Love it
"Buy a car, fund the government/British economy"
"Buy more diesels - it's half the price of petrol you know"
"Keep buying the diesels, but now diesels more expensive that petrol. But keep buying them"
"Be good to the environment, diesels do more to the gallon. Ignore the extra fuel cost"
"Scrappage scheme - get rid of that old shed. Economy bad. Need more money in govt coffers. Chuck it to landfill, and buy a brand new car (that was, of course made NO pollution to produce)"
"Actually, scrappage scheme not so good - forgot we don't make any sodding cars in this country any more. Everyone bought stuff like Toyotas. Then Toyota got washed away. Oops"
"Actually scrappage good - only for Diesels. Diesels are bad now. Just worked it out"

With a DPF that will cause endless problems because the nice salesman said it would be fine just around town. Then find out it's not alright just around town and have to make unnecessary, polluting journeys up and down the motorway to force a regen.
Seemples. ;D

Yyyyup! Horrified at what engineers are being asked of now, purely in the name of safety and emissions... the complete short-sightedness of everything... we all want to save the planet, happy days - but if we did, then what about such as speed bumps, for instance - slow down everyone, except the guys who've just nicked a car, of course. Also what's the worst thing you can do to a car for emissions? Drive it slow, then almost stop, bang the suspension beyond it's normal range, then accelerate fairly hard.. then repeat. Brake dust, hydrocarbons, extra wear on every suspension component, and a marginal cut on engie life. But what does it matter? When the car's 10 years old scrap it! Hurray! Never maintain it, when it makes a funny noise, send it to landfill, and get another one shipped over from Japan! :-[ ::)

I can't imagine even a modern diseasel is any use inside the M25.. unless you take off the DPF and put it in the oven with the Sunday roast every week. ;D
Problem is.. one week the government are being badgered by the EU over CO2 emissions, so they promote tractors, next week it's particulates, so they're out of the window again. The life cycle of a vehicle kinda dictates a more long term view. Sorry - I know, long term view and government in the same paragraph. ::)
-
... and yes, if our politicos were even close to being able to think outside the box, they'd realise that there's more to emissions than the EU kg/100km figure stamped on the V5. ::)

.. as long as they avoid city centres, of course. ::)

And still you see new buildings to house people going up in cities next to high polluting road junctions.
The answer is two fold.
Physically move the population and its work to Scotland and Wales (cure the housing problem too)
Electric driverless cars so people can text each other in complete safety and without creating local pollution.
Joking apart, it has taken a long time for anyone to make the connection between continued increases in respiratory diseases and diesels. 20 or 30,000 deaths a year due to air pollution. We can see it and smell it when we go into a big Spanish city. Those living with it day by day do not. I couldn't believe how bad it was in Glasgow recently.
Old polluting and non standard cars? Get the USA to lift its crippling embargo on Cuba and then we could sell them there by the boat load. ;D ;D ;D

You didn't write the news this morning did you, Varche?
Some study suggesting that we not build any more hospitals, care homes etc next to major roads because doing that will save millions of deaths due to pollution, or some such bollards..

Apparently plans are afoot to ban diesels from the streets of Paris. So if that's anywhere near as effective as they believe how long after to the idea being rolled out across all of France and thence of course into Eu law?
