Title: Unexplained engine cut-out

After driving about 45 mins, just nearing home, I let a car out of my side street and the engine died. the battery, oil and engine lights came on, all the electrics were working (the lights were on and the heater was blowing). the started span the engine but no sign of life. After a fair old curse I pushed the car to a safe spot and, out of interest, tried again and it started immediately. I drove it the 100 yards or so to my parking space, parked, and as I reached to switch it off, it stopped again. The temperature gauge showed normal, the petrol tank was nearly full and the engine did not seem/smell hot. So, a) Please, any ideas of a possible fault? and, b) I have a cheapo fault reader, where is the OBD socket situated? Thanks for any help

Crank sensor. If it`s a 2.5/3.0 use a paperclip for codes. If a 2.6/3.2 do the pedal trick

yep robg has it spot on, crank sensor. GENUINE GM PART ONLY.

Thanks for the replies, I'll test it in the morning. As a point of interest, what price a sensor and are they hard to fit?

2.6/3.2 are circa £70... Only buy from a physical Gm dealer. Buy on line or cheap at your peril.

2001 would be drive by wire so pedal trick. Looking for 0335 crank sensor code. Which, among other possible codes, would be;

10 flashes.
3 flashes.
3 flashes.
5 flashes.

...for the uninitiated. Confirm with a code reader if you wish but generic obd2 readers can be unreliable it what codes they see. Pedal trick doesn't lie :y

True enough of most things, but if a dealer supplies a duff genuine part then you have some recourse... Buy cheap pattern shyte of eBay, you're lucky to get a receipt, let alone a guarantee ::)

True enough of most things, but if a dealer supplies a duff genuine part then you have some recourse... Buy cheap pattern shyte of eBay, you're lucky to get a receipt, let alone a guarantee ::)

Quite right Al, I was really trying to make the point that, as discovered by others, even fitting a GM sensor may not cure the problem, which may still turn out to be another duff sensor. Hence always listen to advice given on OOF regarding codes etc. :y :y :y

But yes most manufacturers have a failure rate. No matter what's being made.

But add in cheap Chinese shite made for tuppence and an even bigger mark up than oe, then you see where the quality goes. Such as it is. New sensors do fail.

Just hope my new spare is ok in the boot after being rattled around in the box for the last 40k odd miles.

Mine is safely tucked up in the garage... the AA can drag the car home if it goes ;D

I too would be suspecting crank sensor, but see what codes are stored (paperclip (2.5/3.0) or pedal trick (2.6/3.2))

Well, sensor replaced by local garage yesterday, £120 lighter in the wallet, but, so far, all seems well. So thanks for all advice.
