had to go from Louth to Horncastle last week , following my client in his Audi 2.0 turbo, S-line A3 thingy whatsit...
a very nice run..... opened the throttle all the way , most of the time....
and stuck to his audi like glue.... despite his leaden right foot "having fun"
the only point where he pulled away, was on the way back through a little complex of corners running up&round a hill.... where my higher centre of gravity, softer suspension, and the full load of high density rockwool on board made the body roll a bit too worrying... given that i don't know the road or what the next corner will bring..... would quite probably have stayed planted on the throttle if i'd known them....
as to whether he was "going for it"
suffice to say that anyone covering about 2 miles in 60 secs is probably fairly committed....
of course, the elite drank the petrol like water, and the tyres were somewhat scrubbed and the pads a little "warm" when we got back to Louth....
but it was nice to remind myself that it's an executive guided misslie on more than just motorways..... :D
meanwhile, he's off to get his audi tuned to be sure it's developing what it's supposed to :D
nice run that !

120mph? Committed to losing their licence, perhaps ::)

i was being "discrete " about the bare numbers mate.....
perhaps.... he lives most of his life in another country..... where he gets driven around by a company driver......

Tell you what mate you can tell that to the family should there be an incident :'(
Doesnt sound like you were driving to the conditions of the road with sufficient due care or leaving much of a buffer on the safety margins. Sorry if I sound like I am ranting but search in the history and you know my feelings on the subject. >:( >:(
I save my lead foot for an empty autobahn

If my memory serves me well that'll be the A153, lovely twisties a few playful cambers & runs past Cadwell Park or Caddy as it's locally known. As for the more responsible members, yes public highways are not racetracks & none of us want to injure anyone (or worse) of course not. I have certain bits of road i enjoy but i NEVER fly round a blind bend (even if i know the road) or tear it up where there are junctions leading to possible hazards. I only play where i'm putting no one but myself at risk.
Not all of us have access to autobahns so i find that a tad condescending, besides flat out in a straight line is hardly exciting or skilled.
Some folk ride very high horses!!!!!!! ::)

I used to class the dual carriagway from Gainbro cross roads towards Skeggy, every time I had a diiferent car used to see how fast it was travelling at the top as it leveled out, went that way in Feb last year and now it has a roundabout at the top. ;D ;D ;D ;D

I'm up there for a reason.... :(
Quiet motorway/autobahn same thing (not all the autobahn is unlimited) ;)

There was a report in the papers some while back that IIRC said that 25% of the population had a relative killed or injured in a vehicle incident in the last 10 years.
The home page says we have 3509 members, so .. if those statistics are right, 877 members of this forum have had relatives killed or injured. If only 5% of the forum are active, that still means 40 members have been affected.
So I think bragging about racing an Audi at 120mph on public roads is not only downright rude it is crass stupidity - both the driving and the bragging.
It is also my opinion that, probably, the racing was more "important" in the drivers mind than any thought of others safety.
rant over ... for now

Still straight line & flat. Had my Mig nearly 2 yrs, saw 144mph once, still creeping up but not much left & if a tyre or anything else let go at that speed it's game over. I do'nt need to do it again, i know how fast it goes, since then i rarely break 3 figures & that's only in short bursts.
Despite enjoying the punch between gears & throwing a big RWD car about i spend 95% of my time cruising 'cos Migs are good at that too & i'm getting old!!!!!!!! :D

Re your signature - its not speed that kills - its the misuse of speed that is dangerous. I have driven high performance cars both on the road and on the race track at high speeds (remember when there was no speed limit in the uk?) safely. It can be lethal to drive at 30mph in the wrong conditions!
-
Even PROFESSIONALS such as the LATE, GREAT, Ayrton Senna can and have paid the ultimate price for speed. It only take a split second or a mechanical breakage, AND THATS IT.... GAME OVER
we all like to see how fast we can go but there are proper places to do it.
said my bit :P

Agree for the most - but ultimately when you crash, the severity, injuries and likelyhood of death all increase when the speed of impact is increased. Therefore, speed kills :y

Whilst I agree with you ... I cannot for the life of me think of any way that driving at 120mph on a public highway can be classed as anything other than "the misuse of speed", especially when concentrating on racing the car in front and NOT therefore on what else is going on.
When there was no speed limit in the UK there were much much fewer cars, pedestrians and cyclists, and those cars that could do "high speed" were very few and far between. It is a totally abstract and futile comparison

An old cliche, but its still the sudden stop that causes the problem, not the speed on its own.

Why crash - inappropriate use of speed with regards to road conditions maybe?
High speed impacts - Top Gears "hamster" survived. I also know a guy who barrel rolled some years back at the Pod at in excess of 180mph - broke a lot of bones but survived.
I don't condone misuse of speed on either the roads or the race track - agree the harder the impact the bigger the risk of injury or worse - but ultimatelt it in not speed per se that kills. I have seen people killed in relatively low speed impacts.
I think i will agree to disagree with your view.
[edit]Reference Entwoods comments about racing at 120mph on the roads - couldn't agree more - that is moronic and stupid. Racing should be undertaken by sane individuals on a race track.
By the way referring to the lack of uk speed limits was not meant as a "comparison", rather to demonstrate that one could drive at high speeds in the right conditions legally then.[/edit]

Dont forget that we are cocooned and relatively safe... Peter Pedestraian or Charlie Cyclist is not so lucky! :(

Over the years the one thing I have learnt is do not assume anything. The road could be fantastic, I have driven/ridden some roads which could safely be taken at silly speeds, I have also driven substantially below the number on a stick as I considered it to be safer at a lower speed.
Rule 1 never assume

I think everyone has done this at sometime or other being fair..... speeding i mean....
I would bet that most of us have done the speed we are talking about on the motorway, knowing full well if the police caught us we could end up behind bars.
-
I know the road in question & given my occupation am very aware of hazard perception. I used to ride bikes, many on here still do & have posted how quick they are as have many posted how quick their Migs are. Some post how mpg drops when they boot it, i could go on. Some patrol car officers admit they enjoy thier job,top speeds, 3.0 auto vs 2.5 man races have been posted. We know none of these were track days so why has this post been jumped on?
Suddenly everyone's holier than though. :-?

Agreed I certainly have.
However I do not race other motorists on the roads. Having raced on the track I know just how much concentration needed to compete with other drivers - vision tends to become a bit more "tunnel" than normal - this is a dangerous situation on a public road when most of the concentration is on racing and not on peripheral items such as other traffic! A recipe for disaster.

I think i will agree to disagree with your view.
To be honest I'm not sure why this is even being discussed. Speed limits are there for a reason and nobody should be trying to justify why it's OK to break them.

Not justifying that its ok to break speed limits :-? Agreed speed limits are there for a reason, usually, but not always, a good one.
-
TBH I'm not sure I got my point across too well.
I agree that it's more inappropriate use of speed than speed itself that is the problem.
The point I was trying to make was IF you have an accident at a higher speed, the consequences, hence risks, are increased compared to a lower speed. I wasn't trying to say that speed would CAUSE the accident.
Does that make sense? ::)
This is something I'm really sensitive about, I lost a 19 year old friend who was in a car accident not too long ago :'(

There is an extreme difference betwen the occasional high speed burst on a motorway, and bragging about racing at 120 mph on a "normal" road ... with the thread entitled "ha ha ha Omega scares crap out of Audi owner...... "
The purpose appears to be to speed, intimidate, and show off.
IMHO shows a callous disregard for other people and a total lack of responsibility.

Sympathies with the loss of your friend James & i don't condone inappropriate driving, but given the amount of similar posts that were welcomed in the past i don't understand why Max is being strung up for posting nothing new. I've attended funerals of 2 friends who went young, watched thier parents grieving & welled up myself. It's awfull i know but Max must be feeling very outcast at the moment.
I'm sure he meant no wrong.

I am personally friends with Max and I can vouch he has always been a nice guy.
I don't feel that he's being strung up though - my perception is that we're just having an amicable debate about use of speed?

Sorry about the loss of your friend & yes that does now make sense.
Cant beat a good debate - signing off for the night now as some work to do.

That helps. Did'nt realize you're mates, thought everyone was ganging up on him & my protective side came out. I've always been like that, can't help it even though i've never met him.
At least i can stop crusading now! ::)

Lol, I've met max on numerous occasions, Maria and I have also had the pleasure of having some beers with him, eating with his family and staying over his place for the weekend while enjoying some Miggy tinkering.
You have my word I'm not knocking Max one bit - we are and will remain very good friends -
To be honest, this isn't about Max, just about the specific points highlighted in this thread.
But that doesn't stop me enjoying a good debate and conveying the beliefs I have :y

I am not rounding on Max but I feel very strongly about the subject and I have my reasons....
...had plenty of good banter with him over the years but bragging about such speeds, let alone driving at them, is not responsible and you could ruin it for some family. It took mine 8 years to get over the worst of it 18 years later there are still scars :(

no offence or umbrage taken..... from any of it...
to be honest I was somewhat surprised by the speed.... but since I had no idea of where exactly we were going.... ( a follow me to XYZ situation) I initially felt I ought to at least keep up....
at that point the speed was more like 80.
when the road opened up, it climbed rapidly.... and frankly I got andrenalined up and went along for the ride.... somewhere in the back of my temporarily rather childish mind, i felt i was defending the miggy's honour from a jumped up little A3 (okay so it's remarkably more than that but still..... )
there were other road users once or twice, and he slowed down to more sensible speeds while they shared the tarmac , no matter which side of the road they were travelling along....
and absolutely sat on the speed limit in built up or restricted areas...
although I'm normally fairly quick... i'm usually much more sedate these days (although I hold my hands up to having been a complete loon in my youth)
i seek not to justify it.... in reality there is no valid defence in law...
but bloody eck it were fun.
I doubt i'll repeat the experience any time soon though.,
and for those with 17hand + horses.
motorways and autobahns are every bit as dangerous , perhaps more so.... especially with the rise of the screen mounted sat nav.... which people appear to pay more attention to than the actual road..... >:( and require every bit as much concentration and respect as a twisty A or B road.
(i've had several near misses on the M1 , M25, M40, M42, and M6 in the last 12 months , with people paying no attention to other road users, but instead staring at their little colour screens mounted in stupid places...... and looking rather shocked when they look up / round to see there was in fact a big black miggy in the "space" they were "aiming at" (if, that is , driving blind/dumb/without looking can be called aiming ) and no , i was NOT doing 120 at the time.... not even near it.... more like about 70-75)
I know all about the effects of ignorance.... having had my neck broken in 1989 by a nurse running some red lights on her way home for lunch, doing (calculated by police) 70 in a 30 limit.
now THAT was unreasonable no matter what spin you put on it.
now drink yer milk.
