Title: 2.2dti elite estate
Post by: joff on 16 December 2014, 14:11:45
So the brothers elite has the old fuel pump snag, thing is do we fix it or sale as is. 130k on the clock still starts and drives but what would it be worth as is ? Think they want about £300 to fix the fuel pump electrics !! Is it time to say goodbye to her. Has anyone ever had the fuel pump fixed in this way ?

Lift pump, yeah?

Unless they're dramatically different on the 2.2s, it's (very simply, lots more backache etc.. in practice, of course)
carpet up
plate off
undo ring
pull off old pump
stick on new one

reassemble.

If you're not into the job yourself, it's definitely an easy enough job for many of the wandering Omega mechanics there are out there.

Also, personally, if you're ever at the point where there's 'the car's value' in work to be done, I tend to say, well, yeah, but keep the car - after all, once it's done you know it's never going to need doing again, you know? Again, the perception when people are in two minds about keeping a car is 'hmmm, need to get rid of this car, it's costing me money, get another' as if any other car will, automatically, never cost a penny in maintenance.. the next car could cost you double in a year. You don't know. I say stick to what you know - or buy another good 'known' Omega off the forum  :y

Like buy mine, for instance...  :y only one huge dent on the rear wing, passenger door mirror currently sellotaped on, three types of alloy wheel, comes with free bird muck, clunky autobox, exhaust in need of welding... oh, and needs the liftpump doing at some point  ::) ::)

No lift pump on a 2.2 DTI

If you are good at soldering, have a crack yourself:

Well, as I say, the Omega being last of the 'proper' cars you can mend yourself, or start of the end, where everything's justa  black plastic box you unclip, throw away and replace... ergo sum! That's a heck of a complicated black plastic box, well beyond me and my mind!

Ok, thinking laterally - if the car can be in a garage, presumably for a few days, being mended - can the ECU itself not be posted off to an OOFer with suitable soldering skills, who could mend the part, then you simply plug it back in a brrrrrummm away you go?

Even if said OOFer wanted to say "give me £150" you're still £150 up, you know? Has to be something price-wise between flogging the car and pay £300+

One of these, I believe: http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/mosfet-transistors/5430119/

Removing the potting compound looks like the worst part of that process..

Its an IRFZ44N N Channel Mosfet, pretty easy to source:

Is that the only possible fault though? As most of the usual repairers won't touch it with a shitty stick if anyone has been in with a soldering iron...

(selfishly thinking of the battlebus)
