Title: What made you buy an Omega in the first place?
Post by: jereboam on 25 June 2008, 13:23:03
I really admired my Elite the first time I saw it - I wanted one.  It's all black - it looked like the car Hotblack Desiato would have driven been driven in had he been alive today.

Unfortunately, it belonged to someone else - a colleague.

Three years later, when my patience finally ran out with the Mondeo diesel, I sold it first and started looking for something else - relied on my old LHD Granada till something came along.  And by sheer chance, I happened to mention I was looking for a new car to the aforementioned colleague who said "You can have mine for £2600".  That was a bargain - AutoTrader and Parkers indicated he could have expected £1000 or so more.  He wouldn't take more.  So I bought it, got the dent in the wing and the bashed up door mirror fixed, replaced the rubbish tyres he had on the front, and I haven't regretted my purchase in the nearly three years since.

So why did you buy yours?

Just loved the look of them from the moment I saw one 1995. took me to 2003 before I could get one, but boy am I happy with it.

Mike

P.S what is there not to love about them, cheap to buy, rear wheel drive, cheap to run considering the size of it.

Always been a big motor lover, though due to a crappy job I was stuck with a Mondeo Si on HP.

I saw the Omega on flea bay, made the guy a offer, haggled some more once I was there (He said it was a elite, when it was a CDX, I knew from the pics, but used it as a tool to barter with)

I've always loved Omega's and wanted one from a early age.

I prefere the Pre face lift on the inside, but much more like the out sie of the face lift. but as I'll be inside rather than sat on the roof, the pre face lift won

Bought my first one as a tow car. It's the heaviest, most practical RWD car I could get. Only other option was 4x4 which for the few weeks a year I spend towing just isn't worth it.

Plus they munch miles on the motorway  ;)

Always been a Vauxhall man and liked the idea of a big safe car with loads of toys  -plus if the plod & royal protection use them they can't be that bad (or just coz theyre cheap) :y

Biggest and most comfortable 2.0 estate I could buy to move to Ireland where the road tax is based on engine size.
Been a GM man for many many years so it fitted in fine. Had it nearly 5 years and never regreted it .

I had a cavalier and loved it! Decided then that i wanted an omega as they were quite rare around here and definately an unusual car for a woman to be driving! Have been asked several times how i manage driving my husbands big car!
They are common as muck round here now, every other taxi is a meega!  :(
I regretted buying a 2.2 but i love my MV6! :y

`Wanted a Big estate.....the Omega had the most space for me (being very tall) and mucho-space for my three dogs.
Had two so far: `started with a 2 litre and then 'graduated' to my present 2.5 litre.
I really-really like my capacious Miggy :y

Only ever owned Estates,

Astra
Astra
Mazda 626
Omega

When I decided I wanted an even bigger estate, there wasnt many places left to go, plus I Liked Ljay's meega, and wanted similar, but higher powered, waited until one came up at the right price, got the train to Yeovil and drove it back!

I fell into owning one. Had a Rover which had been LPG'd but the bodywork was shot so I decided it would make a brilliant donor vehicle for a Car engined/LPG powered/Tadpole trike. Even had a TV company interested in putting together a show on making it until I struggled to find someone to make up the frame.
Still sat on the drive waiting for the moment and I needed something else running LPG and my local converter said 'Got an Omega...it's an automatic' and I thought that'll do me. It really has been an eye-opener and a daily challenge to use it 'properly' but it is forever rewarding from a surprisingly good mpg to totally over the top comfort to that moment when the numpty ahead sees you in his mirror and thinks 'unmarked police car'. Ah the joys of modern motoring

I've always been a Vauxhall/Opel man and have had (still got!) Opel Monza's for the last 18 years but I needed a bloody great estate to put a tank in :o Yup, you heard me, a tank! A model tank agreed but bigger than your average model tank!

I've been playing with model tanks for some years now and a Monza with a high lip at the rear is not the ideal motor for shifting them around in! My everyday motor was getting beyond the joke last year and I'd thought of an Omega Estate as they are huge and very good value. I was idly having a look on Auto-Trader and managed to find one two miles away from my postcode :) And the rest as they say is history!

Humpy

PS That's not me in the pic, it's the guy that sells them!

My Dad used to have a Senator, which was rather nice (K293WPC, IIRC  ::)). I'd always had pretty mundane runabouts but started to think back to the Senny and how comfy and effortless it was. Also started to realise that it was going to be "now or never" the way things were going with fuel prices and the like so I had been mulling over the idea of an Omega when I just went out one day and chopped in my old Laguna for one.

SWMBO was shocked as I generally NEVER do anything on impulse (OK, I had been thinking about this for a few months but that's impulse for me.) Can honestly say I've never looked back.

It's also nice to have a car with a following. I've been used to this with kit cars where there's a great community of friends I've met through the internet and events, etc. I'm glad to have done the same through my day to day car too. :y It was never going to happen owning a Laguna, that's for sure. ;D

Kieren,

None of our models fire anything as we go along to a lot of public events but yes the 1/4 scale King Tiger (and others) are fully mobile. Found this on YouTube.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=nvrCNd68M-Q

There are others on their with the model complete, painted and with sounds to give you the idea!

Humpy

PS Here's a video of us unloading at the War and Peace Show at Beltring, near Maidstone a couple of years ago with our camouflaged Mazda van :y It goes on to show you a display we do for the public. I'm in there but the vids not overly clear!

Bought our first one y accident rather than desire, never been into Vauxhall’s though had a couple as company cars in a previous life.

Early 2000 and we wanted a big estate car, originally to convert to 7 seat, there was a kit available.

Didn’t want a Volvo, Just happened to see one in Auto Trader so went to se it, to be honest I was not sure what they even looked like. :-[

Anyway, I will always remember the deal though not the price now.
There it was sitting on the drive, 1995 2.0l select, estate, in Black, I know based model but still nice at the time. Looked nice, also on the drive was a new Volvo Estate, always a good sign that he needed to get rid of it cos he has already replaced it. Went for a drive, I knew I wanted it before we got to the end of the road, anyway chatting away seems that no one had come to see it yet, been up for sale a while. NOW he said to me that the problem is no one wants big cars anymore, petrol, parking etc. Ofcourse I agreed, said car was a bit bigger than I wanted, I can lie sometimes, anyway long story short the perfect deal, he was offering reduced price before I had even started.  :y

I ran the car till 2002 when I had to pass it on to swmbo, following major surgery found that the car was too heavy for me on a regular basis, even opening the door, it is such a solid car.

Swmbo is 4 feet nowt and a bit and was worried about such a big car, she soon learned and had less problem parking it than I did. ::) ::)

We kept the car till last year when we got another one.

i have owned Vauxhalls for at least the last 15 years, i worked for a dealers and so knew the product well.

I had a Zafira before my first Omega, doing 30,000 miles a year in a MPV is not ideal whereas the omega fitted the bill perfectly, i sold the zafira and bought a newer Omega Elite for 1K less than i got for the Zafira.

Never really looked back, total reliability and comfort by the bucketload, so when it was time to sell that one there was only one thing that could replace it.....another Omega....however the one that i bought needed a lot of work doing on it.....

We are still getting used to the new one, if it does the south of france and back with no issues then my trust in it will grow.

I used to have a Granada Scorpio 2.9 as company car and really enjoined the smooth V6 and RWD.

However I thought that it would be out of my price range to buy one privately, so went to look for a nice 1.8L or 2.0L Vectra. I had an Opel Kadett (MkI Astra) for 5 Years in the past and really liked the Opel/Vx built-quality.

Then I went to this huge car supermarket (back in 1998) and was surprised at how cheap were nearly new Omegas - I did not even consider it beforehand.

It was a no-brainer, and I bought a silver 97 R-Reg Omega, 10 months old and with only 20k miles under the belt (Motorway miles, judging from the nearly-new brake discs). It has a super-refined 2.5 V6 engine, and I really really liked it.

Had the car for next 3 years, and in 2001 went back to the same car supermarket... came back with a black 2001 Y-Reg 2.6 CDX, only 4 months old and with just 6,400 miles. I ran for the next seven years because I had nothing to replace it with. I finally sold last month or reasons which I explained elsewhere in this forum. It is very sad they don't make them any more....

thought i would try a vaux.after having ford, rovers all estate versions.

The miggy just kinda sang to me as i test drove it.engine has a nice little whistle to it on low revs and slowly disappears as revs go higher comes back on low revs again.Call it the vauxhall whistle
And it is roomy enough for ice hockey kit (goal minders)and field hockey kit.Not mine me daughters :D

My veccy was off the road with a number of things which I didnt have the time to sort out so I was looking for a cheap jag that worked but needed some TLC long term.... then a taxi driver friend offered me the omega at a snip.  Test drove it over the weekend and I never had any Jag cravings again.... (until the XF came out)  ;D ;D

Edit: and I was sick of the understeer of the veccy! bleurgh!  :-X

Always had a soft spot for vx. Always had more of a soft spot for rwd, had an even greater soft spot for lage exec cars. Have always loved the miggy... it is a charmer alright which leaves you looking either in aw or inspired.

To me it is only of the most beautiful of cars. To drive it is fun, comfortable, and whole heartedly enjoyable.

Im afraid the wife has known for sometime now that there will always be other women in my life.  :-* :-* :-*

Ownership great until GB introduced backdated car tax rises >:( At £480 a year to tax in a couple of years it looks like it's time to say bye bye :'(, though that will be challenge in itself as potential buyers will be thinking the same :(

So I decided to get one when they were more affordable, so was looking on the Internet for common faults and things to look out for when buying one, and found "The Forum"..... after a few weeks of being a member on here I came across a nice MV6 which I still have and will have hopefully for a number of years :y

Always liked larger exec type cars -- love gadgets --- like LPG  :)

Already had ( have) a V6 QX, the mig arrived, heading for the breakers. Never seen that colour before and liked it. Coincidentally another mig turned up in same colour, also due to be broken.

Thinks .... between the two of the breakers is a decent miggy crying for life .... so I decided to enter the miggy world.

A few months later and the list of need to / want to do is getting longer. Everytime one thing gets done I think of a few more to do !!!!!

Wife had a M plate cavvy & loved it to bits but always wanted the bigger "version"
When we were looking at cars, I wanted to buy a 99-2000 BM 523, but swmbo still wanted a mig. So as a compromise, I agreed, as long as it was a black V6.
Glad I did cos the elite spec puts BMW's to shame & I trust the mig going round roundabouts more than my sisters 528

Plus I'm convinced my mig growls every time it see's a bmw. Can't help showing them up :D

Granada Scorpio - which at the time I thought was the best tow-car in the world - was getting very old, and continental travel/breakdown insurance was getting expensive, then the gearbox developed a leak. :(

I like big, comfortable RWD for towing, and need a car of at least 1800kgs, so the options became BMW, Mercedes ( various options) or the Omega, with the budget I had at the time (2002) it then became a '99 Miggy, a 94 beamer or a 92 merc....   when you compare the toys, comfort etc etc .. the miggy won hands down .. so I got one.

Best decision ever .. never looked back it is a brilliant car all round and a fantastic tow-car

I have just changed to a newer one for no other reason than to get a newer one to keep longer !!

I actually never liked Opels much, nor Omega and am a bit of a French car fan. But 2 years ago I moved to Switzerland and was looking for a relatively large yet cheap estate to use as a family car (2kids 5 and 3years old). Was looking at various 2l Mondeos, Lagunas, Xantias, a bit older Passats but was secretly hoping to find a 2.5td XM. I know what you will say... As a XM neve came along I was at a stage of choosing between 2 black Mondeos when I spotted the Omega. Really smart looking, you could see it was taken care of, loaded with extras, cheaper than what I had budgeted, bit higer mileage. Was concearned about fuel costs and other expences (4 x 225-16 decent tyres dont come cheap), and the mileage, but complete service history from Opel, all the bills, one previos owner swayed the decision. Now dont know how I would ever drive again anything with 4 cylinders or with no cruise. May still replace it with 3.0v6 diesel espace late this or early next year.

Grew up with proper cars, RWD boot one end bonnet the other. Drove taxis (not owner driver) on hourly paye when i was down South. The bosses liked big petrol motors so for years we drove Granadas. Licencing laws dictated @ Mreg upwards then which was the end of the Granada, Scorpios were wink so they bought an early (nearly new then) base model M reg 2.0 manual, i loved it.
Long time ago now :-[ but i still love 'em!!!! :y

Always had a liking for largish estates, had a CX estate then an XM estate, Merc 230TE estate plus diversions via VW camper and a Berlingo.

The Omega is a lot of car for the money (space and toys), much more luggage space than Volvos etc, just took a while to track down a latish diesel estate.

Fingers crossed it's going well a year or so on, ticked all the boxes I wanted, just hope all the toys keep working!!

My Nan got a new MK2 cavalier every year up till the MK3 which she was not keen on so she kept her last MK2 which was a SRI 130 and i loved that car (i was only 11 when she got it) but then she got the first 2.0 16V calibra that come in to the vauxhall garage and had that for 9 yeras so when a come of age i then had to have a vauxhall and it had to be a MK2 cavalier (17 MK2's in total) and if i could find a SRI 130 saloon in black or grey i would have it and never sell it.
My Dad had the ford granada (never a fan) but in 97 i made him buy a 95 omega 2.5 diesel CD estate in dark green and he has never looked back (on his 5th now) and due to this i now have them.
The omega is one of the best cars on the road i think its safe to say. :)

i was on the lookout for a new motor and i'd had an 02-plate omega for a while as a company runaround. it had 600 on the clock when i got it and i racked up so many miles in it, just remember it being so comfortable to drive and sit in (i was out on the road a lot).

i was looking at big motors like xj6, 5 series etc and when looking on auto trader at the price check thing it said 'like these cars? then try these'. it suggested an omega.

i remembered the 02 omega i had and then saw i could get an omega for a third of the price of a 5 series, with more toys and a bigger cabin. it was a no brainer. i went looking for one straight away.

after a while of searching, coming across real bad examples and waaay overpriced examples, i found the mothership on auto trader. low mileage 3.0 v6 elite, well looked after, i fell in love with it instantly and have never looked back.

that was over 4 years ago and i've loved every minute of owning this car ever since. now on 149k and still running like an absolute dream (although a lot of maintenance has taken place recently to ensure that's still the case!!)

without doubt the best car i've ever owned. i would happily recommend an elite to anyone. i plan on driving mine for many many more years to come.

*grins*  :)

I had my Honda VTI for five years ( still in garage) and i needed a van. Looked round for one and realised i could have the best of both worlds by buying an estate. Remembered back to my days of Cavaliers and my beloved Carlton and decided to look around for an Omega Estate. Nearly bought a W reg 2.5CDX estate from a dealer near Sandhurst but, despite leaving messages on his answer phone, i couldn't get clarification about what had been done during the "service history", so saw my Elite advertised at another dealer in Eaton Socon for £1900. Year newer X reg, service history,£1200 spent on it previous July ( receipts checked with garage) and £900 cheaper that CDX. Bit of a no brainer really so bought it. Love the car. Few jobs to do on it when i get the cash.  :)

I bought my first Omega as a progression from the two Carltons that I had, first one was 1990 2.0CDi, then upgraded to a 1992 2.6CDX, which was ultra comfortable.  Thought about upgrading to an earlier Omega (pre-1999), but an immaculate facelift one (2000 X plate) came up that was too good to miss!!.  I had that for almost 3 years until this April, it has now been replaced with a 2001 3.2 Elite.  Still waiting to load photos of it btw!

My Novavan failed its MOT on the basis that there was not much meat left in the front bodywork. (since been repaired and handed to my bro)

Needed a motor and was going to be lugging stuff about and towing - the Mig came up for sale opposite my house (belonged to my cousin)

Bargain!

Not looked back since, found OOF last year and have had cheap motoring since.

Thanks OOF  :y

was looking for a replacement for my departed senator so having always had a bit of a vx fetish (glutton for punishment ;D )the omega was the obvious choice.i found a black 3 litre elite but mrs bitz threw a wobbly and said it looked like a funeral car ,so i ended up buying a green 2.5cd,which she has moaned about ever since. ::)

Had a Granada that was on its last legs and was looking for a new car.
went to a showroom and saw a second hand elite and was advised that they had to sort the aircon out on it but i could test drive it.
enjoyed the ride they said it would be sorted by the weekend and went to in on the weekend to buy it and was told it had been sold 2 hours earlier.
but that got me the taste and started looing around for another but nothing was forth coming until a mate said he had spotted one for sale on his way into work.
took a spin at lunchtime with him and everything looked good gave the guy a ring and been a happy miggy owner since last year.

My dad had a P reg 2.0 CDX as a company car and I loved it to bits.  In order to get to the Omega I had to go through a Y reg Cavalier, a G reg Cavalier and then a K reg Granada.

At the point I knew I wanted a 3.0 Elite 'cos I must have toys.  I seem to remember I went to a specialist, can't remember where, but ended up buying it from a place in Croydon back in early 2002 for over £10k.

Back then I was living at home and the Bank of Mum and Nan sorted me out - no mortgage then.

Have owned it since then, lived with it breaking down on me when I was in the New Forest, and put 50k miles on it.

Drives much better than the Cavaliers and Granada and has never needed topping up with oil.

Dad gave me a mondeo which was on its last legs, and the bloke who worked next door to me got an omega from Dk in Thatcham. OOH THAT LL DO, I thought, 180od horses massive boot drop down seats v6 smooth and loads of toys and comfort with all important centre arm rest, test drove a 99 cdx and loved it, was a bit worried by vague stearing and fuel economy but michledever sorted the steering and i promised myself an lpg conv. But then i thought wont bother with lpg i wont have the car long enough to get the money back, so i left it.

5 and a half years later i now have 3.2 elite and love it, zenons, parking sensors, colour sat nav, heated seats 4 cd changer built in phone, memory leather seats and diming mirror, sunroof AND electronic dual zone climate control and and and the list goes on, looks better drives better, drive by wire throttle, no egr, dis pack or hbv. Now just got to sort lpg...

Oh and most important of all a top forum that gives more back up than any dealer could dream of. Thanks to all.

My mom bought her '03 Omega in 2004 and I had been in it loads of times and driven it a few times and really liked it. Decided I could buy a lot of car for not much money at all compared to 5 series Bmw's etc.

Always liked big vauxhalls started with a 3.3 ventora but that was a while ago now. When my senator finally fell to bits the elite just seemed a natural progression. That was six years ago and counting.  :y

I must admit... In considering a mig I did do a bit of research into them. Thats when I discovered OOF.... as a visitor loitering in the wings  ::) Well.... After coming here how could I not get one!!! What with Lizze and her 130mph tales and the talk of such love it was done and dusted!  ;) ;) And long may it continue!!!!!!!  :y

After having a string of brand new 2.0 GL & CD Carlton's, I progressed onto my own 3.0ltr CD Senator which I held onto for some time until the dreaded rear wheel rot set in :'( :'( :'(.  I spoke to my Vx dealer and did a good px deal on a 3 year old 3.0ltr Elite in Black, leather interior, etc, etc.. Loved it (but missing my Senny), but then had to find some cash and sold it 4 years later, and "temporarily" bought a banger, that then did 90k with me, until I px at 250k in a good deal on my current miggy.

Wanted the speed, comfort, reliabilty, of a big six cylinder Vx again, and I am again not disappointed! :y :y

Bought the miggy because i wanted a "normal car" to do my work mileage in.... rather than our family MPV....

and the bastards at VX stopped making senators...  which had previously been my "car of choice" for about 15 years. (5 of them....  )

needless to say, I wasn't going to buy anything less than a 3.0 ....  and subsequently, 2 nice black elite estates have come my way... and been very much loved.....      the current V reg one is a glorious thing...

I will have to replace it at some point....    and I'm not so enamoured of the facelift models.,..   the interior sucks in comparison... and bits of the exterior make it look a tad "pregnant" ......

but I may learn to live with it....     coz the other choices are a bit limited....a 530 BMW touring....    is currently top of the alternatives list....

I'm just going to have to grin and bear the fuel prices and road tax hikes....

Learnt to drive in my own Viva HA van in 1977, but was blessed with a few lessons in my Dad's BMW 2500 (1972 model)

Then was allowed to use the car socially when dropping parents off for functions and meals out etc so my Dad could enjoy a drink.

Allthough having a variety of large and small cars I allways end up back with the Motorway Munchers.

Wanted one of those 100ft long american cruisers since I was about 4 and I haven't really grown up since, Omega's the closest I can get. I blame Sheriff John Bunnell Ret. (ired or ard?)... "this is a police squad car... it's a crime fighting tool"   :D

Plus I didn't want FWD or a poncy luftwaffe propeller on my car  ;D

Got the cambelt & everything done on it yesterday, running better than ever now  :y
