Title: Knocking noise offsde front
Post by: terry paget on 26 December 2014, 09:21:43
2.5 petrol estate MFL manual
This silly car is driving me potty. this car has a rattle right hand front of car. As you may recall, I have changed the right hand drop link, no joy; I found the air box loose so I changed all its mountings, no change; I changed the anti-roll bar mountings, it's just the same. I am out of ideas. It's a plasticky sort of rattle rather than a metallic knock. The front bumper and the inner wheel arch make the right sort of noise, nut they are not loose. The noise occurs as I go over minor bumps in the road at low speed. I cannot nake it do it by bouncing the car on its suspension in the garage.

The car lacks the front input pipe before the air cleaner, but I can's see that doing it. It couldn't be the strut, could it? I fitted new ATP wishbones and track rods both sides in March, all joints seem fine.Tyres are nice soft 205/65R15s on steel wheels.

Any ideas?

How much of the intake pipe is missing? There's the initial intake duct, which runs from the front of the radiator to under the head light, and a flexible pipe connecting this to the air filter housing...

The duct is rigid plastic held in place on rubber mountings with screws securing it to the body, the flexible pipe clips to the airfilter housing but has a plastic collar on the other end which is normally secured in place by the rigid duct. Without the rigid duct, the flex pipe might knock over rough surfaces, and without the flex pipe the duct can move around.

Refit the missing bit and try again ;)

The rigid pipe is missing. The flexible pipe from the air box is in place. I do not have the rigid duct. the car came without it, in the way of used cars..
The flexible pipe seems to sit happily enough on its hole but I suppose it could bounce up and down on the airbox mountings. I will remove the flexible pipe and try that. Thanks for the suggestion.

That the rigid pipe is missing would suggest post prang bodgery :-\

Removing the flexi pipe will stop it flapping around for testing purposes, but ideally you need to replace the missing rigid pipe...

Offside front goes 'pitter patter pitter patter' at low speed, over minor undulations. I had an inspiration - I thought it was the nut on top of the offside Mcpherson strut loose - just the right noise I thought. So I checked - and it wasn't loose. Bother.

Found it. There was a cable hanging in the space ahead of the RH wheel arch. It had a clip on it, and should have been clipped out of harm's way. Its function is a mystery, propably some sort of diagnostic. Any ideas?
