Been looking at this tablet (http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/prestigio-multipad-quantum-8-inch-8gb-android-42-tablet-black-a95ln) or the kindle fire . Which one to get ???
-
I'd stick to better brands, and avoid Amazon's clamped down Fire range like the plaque

Android is the operating system. At 8", that's not much bigger than a mobile phone.

Ah so is this the best operating system ? Any other systems to consider , my phone is only 1" square screen so this would be bigger to use for internet out and about :)
Whats wrong with the maplin one ?

Android is the most common OS. Used in samsung galaxy and the likes. Trouble is, unlike iOS, there are loads of different flavours of it. If your going to use it for internet out and about, you'll need to use a sim card for 3g, unless you find a wifi connection. These tablets are fine for most things. It's only when you start asking them to do complicated stuff they fall down.
Not being funny but, with you having to ask what android is, this one would be fine for your needs.

Don't think the maplin one can take a sim card :-\

The Tesco Hudl 2 (http://www.tesco.com/direct/hudl2-8-wi-fi-tablet/454-7907.prd?pageLevel=&skuId=734-8568) has received very good reviews.
The Maplin one could be ok or not. Impossible to know unless someone has actually used it. Personally, I wouldnt risk my money on an unknown tablet.
Although I have suggested the hudl2, I hate Tesco and anything to do with Tesco.

Been mentioned a couple of times that they don't cope well with anything other than a very strong wifi signal. :-\

And the Maplin's one will be better in that respect because .............???
TBH, I have briefly used a friends hudl at home and we had no issues with wifi reception. I suspect the op in the other post has a duff unit.

Because they're not hudl's.

We bought the prestigio 10-1 tablet from maplin about a year ago ,no issues so far ,but needed to add extra memory via a micro sd card which works well and sits almost flush so you dont know its there, battery life is good ,we bought the less expensive version with no sim (didnt need one).
all in all no complaints ,works well and is more than good enough for everyday web browsing emails etc.
this one I think
http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/prestigio-multipad-quantum-101-inch-8gb-android-42-tablet-black-a70lq
And seems to work ok on wifi all over the house and outside any chippys etc on holiday!

The cheap shite unbranded ones tend not to get very good updates after release for security fixes (or be well integrated in the first place) which is the reason I'd avoid the Craplin and other unbranded shite.
So when its brand new, you suffer from the poorly built software (with Android devices, each manufacturer takes various bits of Google's work, and others, and integrates it all together), which may or may not be an issue if you only browse the web.
When its more than a few weeks old (ie, by the time it reaches the UK), it'll be full of known security holes with known exploits, and you are relying on the OEM to provide updates, which most don't. This is a catastrophic problem.

Well before you do, read what Jaime has said.

The specs on that Maplin one are quite poorly for the money being charged, you can get a 7" Asus MEMO Pad with better specs for £80 from Argos.
Granted you lose an inch on the screen size, but you're saving £20 and getting a branded unit with better overall specs.

They do two versions.
You have the ME173 at £89.99 and the ME176CX at £79.99, the only real difference between the two is that the slightly dearer (ME173) has a higher resolution rear facing camera and is very slightly physically larger (nothing worth writing home about though).

That's a pretty decent Asus for the price tbh, It's only the 8GB though, You'll only have around 4GB left with all the software and pre loaded stuff, Best to get a micro SD card if purchasing this tablet.

Does it need antivirus ?
-
We have a hudl1 and I've just got a kindle fire from father Christmas, both work well on our house WiFi in every room and in the garden, used the fire at work tethered to my phone, no issues.
For what we do they are fine, for general surfing and email, and watching catch up you don't need a mega pounds, tablet, as with tyres,,, Buy what you can afford that does what YOU need it to do.
-

AV options available from Google Play store, although I'm not sure they fully work, as Google forces them to run in Android's (broken) sandbox. I believe most branded/quality AV solutions can detect virii, but not disinfect them.

As already said, you'll only have around 3.5GB of user storage for things like music, pics, etc. Spend the extra tenner and get the 16GB model.
As far as AV goes, I'm sure Android will become a popular target in the end but unless you are installing apps from outside of the Play store and running unrooted it is quite unlikely you'll have anything to worry about immediately (I haven't used any for 4 years and haven't had a problem).
-

Don't really use any anti virus so to speak of, Just an app called 'Clean Master' now an then.
