Title: Head Gasket
Post by: surreyhills1 on 30 December 2014, 17:57:22
I think the head gasket may have gone on my 3.2 Elite - Came back from France 500 mile round trip and noticed a strange rubber/plastic petrol smell and what appeared to be some black smoke coming from the engine bay.

I have also noticed that it looks like steam coming from the exhaust and when I checked the oil filler cap there is a small amount of white sludge under the cap.

Strangely though no sludge on the dip stick and the water expansion tank appears at the normal level and no oil drops in the water.

Not being an expert I think that possibly the head gasket may have just gone maybe that is why there are no definite signs.

I have booked the car into my local garage next week, but I would be grateful on your opinions!

The car was running really well so will be annoying if it is the head gasket as the repair is likely to be more than the cars worth.

Unlikely to be HG on a 3.2

steamy exhaust, normal this time of year.  Mayo on oil cap, normal in cold temps if used for short journeys, esp with shittier oils like Castrol etc.

Can you locate black smoke? Most likely a cam cover gasket leaking a bit of oil on the exhaust manifold gasket.  Pattern cam covers as fitted by back street garages will last a few weeks. Upon returning to them to complain, they will make up a story about warped covers (which can only happen if incorrectly fitted).

As nobody appears to be able to fix our cars properly, including dealers, I'd recommend seeing if a local OOFer is willing to help you DIY it.

Surrey hills would be a clue ::)

What TB said...

Personally I would unbook it, and if your passport allows, pop it over to West Sussex ;)
