Title: Rust on rear wheel arch
Post by: artsoul_no1 on 19 January 2015, 12:38:52
Hi all

Got the usual rust on the rear drivers wheel arch that has started bubbling.

A) Can you get new rear wings or is it better to cut a section into the original (Assuming it is the original although not sure)?

B) What is the rough cost that I should be looking at to get this work completed (wing replaced/repaired, sprayed)

Thanks

Replacement arch(es) from here...

http://carz2.co.uk/

Local shop welded BOTH of mine in and painted for £400.

And trust me, it's worth either going to someone you've seen the work of personally, or travelling a bit for the privilege of quality. It's fine if you don't mind a 'rough it'll do' kind of job, but if you're wanting to cut out and replace metal, I'm guessing you really want a job indistinguishable from the factory. There's just so many arches out there done badly, and it just seems a waste of time, to me. Had similar work done on a classic car once, and it was around the price mark Webby has suggested. If you say £80 spraying per panel, that leaves £120 per side for the metal to be cut out, welded in, smoothed until undetectable.

Remember, almost any idiot can do a rough job, then skim over with filler until it looks nice once painted - but if they're that level of bodge, they'll probably not let the filler properly cure, until the paint starts to fall off after a few weeks, or something similar. Again, all I can say is quality, quality, quality - it always pays. (which is not the same as paying a lot of money - expensive and quality are two different animals)

If you can find the local bodyshop that does insurance repairs, they're a good bet. The best in our area repairs damage to brand new, unregistered cars, freshly imported. (what's that? - I hear you cry - I might buy a brand new car, paying tens of thousands of pounds, and it may have had 'touch-up' work done, and the Manufacturer/Dealer didn't tell me? Yep.)

Yeah as DBG says, make sure they're a reputable firm.

The firm I used in Northampton, I'd never even heard of them. However, looking at galleries on their site gave me confidence and also the once over he gave it on the initial inspection told me they weren't idiots.

If you get some moron take a quick look and be like ''yeah that'll be £800 mate''. then walk away. Find a place that has proof of their work online.

Thanks

Think I'll take my time and look around make sure i find a good place and do it right, as you say.

I saw a place locally that had BMWs and Newish range Rovers waiting for repair, might take a closer look

Good place to start. Just a case of do the job once, and do it well.  :y

+1!

Due to the high cost you dont want to have to do his again in 12 months' time!
