Title: Leaking water pump
Post by: RolandL on 19 January 2015, 17:14:27
Hello,  I appear to have a leaking water pump.  Need to know if it is possible to remove/change it without going having to go as far as removing the timing cover?

Thanks

You can just about do it without... :y

When was the cambelt last done?

Hi Taxi Al

Cambelt isn't due till next year.  I've been losing coolant and have traced it to the pump (checked all the usual culprits, HBV, oil, expansion bottle etc), it's wet in the area underneath the pump.  It was an after market one  :'(  Thinking best option is to change it for a genuine Vaux part.  It won't be cheap but I do have a TC card  ;)

Might be prudent to do the cambelt at the same time :-\ It won't take too kindly to being soaked in coolant and if it let go in a couple of months you'll be kicking yourself...

At least TC will take the edge of the parts bill :y

What's the issue with removing timing belt cover? You don't have to remove the belt... just the cover  :y

+1

But if OP is adamant he just wants to change water pump I'd do all I could to cover the belt with something and catching as much coolant as poss.

Hi Webby,
No issue, it just saves me time/effort in stripping too much off.

By the time you've moved all the other junk out of the way, another half a dozen bolts won't make enough difference compared to the improved access.

Yes, quite easily - did mine back in summer. Just don't drop the bolts down inside or it will have to come off.

Can be done without removing timing cover - as steve636 says be careful with bolts ;)  Personally I'd remove cover for better access.

Better think about a second mortgage mate - good aftermarket such as QH ok (still some about if you look hard enough) ;)

On mine? No - advise here was not to worry. I flushed plenty of fresh water over it and 6 months on all ok  :y
