Title: Caliper paint
Post by: Mr Gav on 19 January 2015, 21:57:11
has anyone got any recommendations on the above?

The last time I used the Foliatec stuff I wasn`t that impressed and it`s expensive, seen a few on fleabay that are quite cheap one part high temperature paints that might be just as good.

I`ve got a quiet week at work this week so I might take advantage and run the cup brush over my spare set of calipers and get them painted  ;)

Helfrods own seems to cope with the Monaro VXR brake temps :y

Whats the quality like? i found the Foliatec quite thin and difficult to get a nice lush colour.

Can't really say... was going for coverage rather than appearance  :-\

You mean you had to cover them three times to get a good finish  ;D

Smooth hammerite works fine  :y

If you prepare the surface properly, any metal paint will do.
If I were going to paint brake calipers, I'd do them either body colour, or more likely, the same shade as the wheels. Either way it would be with the same 2pack paint that I'd paint the car with. 1/4l of paint, hardener and thinners adds up to about £20.

I didn't have any problems with Halford's caliper paint - a couple of coats IIRC. I've half a tin of red left if you want it  :y :y

If I ever choose to do this i think black calipers would look nice. Bit more discreet than ''50 extra BHP Red'' imo

It was a spray can rather than brush on that I used...

Bugger....I ordered some from fleabay last night  ::)

That's the colour I`ve gone for as I have got black wheels and the calipers will just blend in though I am looking forward to the extra 50bhp  ;D

Always happy to try a new product, but the Turbo Weasel has 'Opel OPC blue' calipers - in blue Hammerite, and they'ev been like that for approx 6 years without any sign of the paint coming off or discolouring.  :y

Will be using Hammerite on the V6s calipers when the time comes - probably in a shade of silver, to look nice and OEM-y  :)

NOOFs, will it take the heat from a good thrashing?

Just how hot do you think the caliper gets? Or you could test one with  an infra-red thermometer which is a fairly handy thing to have anyway.
Hammerite works fine on engines, even around the exhaust ports on OHV engines which get much hotter.

Some of us weren't middle aged when we first painted brake calipers!

Possibly, but most on here weren't brought up on calipers. Painted drums anyone?  ;D

Done that too: satin black everytime to hide them.

I've never been tempted to do anything like. Gives the wrong impression when you chop it in/sell it.

:o I know Daewoo parts are scarce, but isn't that a bit extreme...  :-\

Just how hot do you think the caliper gets?

Don't forget that TB rolls into the local BP with the brakes white hot like he's just finished a stint at LeMans, fails to fill it with LPG and then leaves a quarter mile of black rubber as he leaves the forecourt with the rear brakes hammering away on the traction control.. ;)

I must remember to stick it in the car one day to find out :y

I'm guessing as the wheels get way beyond 100C, the caliper must be in the region of "rather warm"?

Paint doesn't burn off the wheels does it?

Something is :P

but I suspect its salt and general wear ;D

The caliper, holding the pads, would surely get a damn sight hotter without effectively a bloody great heatsink rotating in free air?
Title: Re: Caliper paint
Post by: Nick W on 21 January 2015, 18:58:12
I doubt(haven't measured them) that the pads are hotter than the disc, unless you have some exotic setup.
