Strangely, I much preferred the '53 MK1 Consul that I traded in for the seductive lines of the Zephyr. The Consul was much more solidly built, and was also used in many rallies, although the 3 speed box didn't help, but the engine was bullet proof. I loved that car, UWL 64 :y

This one is a consul 375-ome of the last as production ended April 1962 and mine-hvs 322 was registered in march 1962

Digressing slightly ......... my 1973 MKIII Cortina (originally) had a foot operated bellows type screen wash pump, trouble with that was, as I pushed it with my left foot, my right foot lifted from the throttle.  ;D ;D

Floor mounted dipswitch. ;D I had forgotten those. I do remember the vacuum operated window wipers on the 100E Pop that used to slow on hills. Oh and the first Ford my Dad had, window wipers were an optional extra!

Yep, I had a '55 Ford Pop, (then a '53 A40 Somerset), then a '53 Mk1 Consul followed by the '59 LowLine Zephyr, all the Fords had vac wipers, bloody hopeless, as they always packed up wiping just as you were hoofing it past the spray curtain from a lorry. In fact the Consul's were the most reliable in my case. :y

Ford tried their best with that idea ...... it was never going to be very good, but electrickery wasn't like it today. Lotus Elans used vacuum too for their pop up headlamps, they used a box section of chassis as a reservoir to help them however as the car got older, rust made a hole in the box section & so as you went faster, the lights started to pop back down again!  :o ;D ;D ;D

yes, on land rovers.

I also remember hand operated starters (on front of car). Had a Wolsey 16/60 with that. Very useful saved on buying new batteries....

I have seen those on television. Opti used to have a man with a flag infront of his car until the financial crisis led to his early retirement. I think one of his cars still uses carbide lamps

My Nan drove all the way from Chatham to Orkney using the dipswitch instead of the clutch to change gear... ::)

The recollection still brings mum out in a cold sweat ;D

That is fantastic. :y

My mate told his mum that a tyre on her A40 needed some air, put xx pounds in it. When she got back from Scarborough to Northallerton, how was it.? Bit bumpy. He checked the pressure and it was in triple figures cos she hadn't released it to check the pressure just kept pumping till it got there. That was in the days of very ropey crossplies too.

yes got that and fitted reinforced plastic pipe from vacuum pump to wiper motor-that stops wipers slowing down when engine is revved--the original pipe was collapsing under vacuum  :(
