Title: Many things wrong
Post by: danzigfan on 02 February 2015, 16:07:13
Hi guys, me again...Miggy has developed severe coolant leak, there was a leak from I don't know where but wasn't that bad. Almost 1l of coolant missing after a 100 miles, missfire from cold start (I wanted to believe it was faulty coil pack but I'm not so sure now), got 0340 code 2 times but that happened after I removed cambelt cover to see it there's water pump leaking ( and it is leaking, but it seems not so bad), so maybe it was me fiddling around cam sensor that day. No other code stored or appeared while this missfire is happening.  Also there is really strange smell coming out of the exhaust, like something is added to gas fumes and it's smoking all the time, even when engine temp is up to normal. I've been reading a post of a member here few days back and his miggy had similar symptoms leading to head gasket change. Can anyone help me out with this? I'm really confused now :-\ Thanks in advance guys

Sounds like head gasket gone easily done over a weekend if you order all the parts before starting to strip it down.

Pressure test it to be sure, but 4 cylinder Omega HG seem to fail at about 150k miles

Not usually too expensive (here in UK) if you diy.  v6 HG scares me rigid, but a 2.0/2.2 I'd be content to attack I think.

Jaime, I've done one! Lol if that don't give you confidence nowt will  ;D

Anyways, certainly sounds like hg but double check first. And possibly new cam sensor judging by that code.

The mechanical part of is straightforward, it's all the other fiddly crap that you have to do with limited access to get the heads off.

I added half a litre of coolant last night when the engine was cold so I needed to open the expansion bottle. There was a lot of pressure in it needless to say but this morning miggy started with no problem at all. Deff head gasket :-[ Will ask local garage for the price, not going to change gasket by myself - have no tools required sadly

Got quoted about 500eur for head gasket change + cambelt etc..working hours included.... I'm really not into it now so I 'm looking for a miggy replacement. There's a miggy that cought my eyes here... 2.5, 2000year , only 65k miles done, saloon with new exhaust system, just needs cam gaskets for a grand. It's a bit poor spec, probably GL, aftermarket H/U, no rust in dark blue. We'll see.... :-\

My thoughts too but I 'm afraid it could also be cracked head which is not uncommon so I'm planning to either scrap it and strip some bits to reuse on "new one" like polly's, susspension arms, xenon headlight motors and battery and sell MV6 alloys, s/l pump and some stuff. Or replace head gasket and keep my fingers crossed it's only gasket's fault than sell it or use it till the end with 2.5 miggy waiting in garage. I'm still between desisions here :-\

Would it not be cheaper to put a second hand engine in  :-\

There's almost no chance to find an engine with less mileage than 300k/km on omega here.

2.5 it is then if your diagnosis is correct on your current car ... probably breathers blocked on the 2.5 with weeping rocker covers  :-\

Post by: danzigfan on 03 February 2015, 17:28:58
Yes, as usual. Got rocker gaskets already for it and breathers will be done while changing them. I hope only 65k miles will help to drive new miggy for a while :-\
