Hello fellow OOFERS i'm looking for some advice regarding car buying. My son is looking on gumtree and found a Corsa he likes the look of about 60miles away in Shoeburyness. I rang the guy and all seems genuine and 3k sounds about right. I arranged to view on saturday 14th but just before finishing conversation he pointed out outstanding finance on the corsa , he said if we agreed a deal he would get his sister to clear finance using her card and get email from finance company sent immediately to print off and give to me as proof. What do you all think? The car does look good so dont want to be put off too quickly

Hi Paul,
if you are going to view & do the deal on the 14th, my concern would be getting proof from the finance company
that it has indeed been paid off . . . on a SATURDAY
Without being too off putting . .doubtful that finance companies work weekends . . . I may be totally wrong though :-\.
If the car is the '58 plate at Shoeburyness on gumtree . . that is less than a mile from me . . . I could always have a
check out look at it "in the flesh" for you
Regards, Al :y

Al that is the one (sort Of green colour) if you could have a sneeky look that would be great i'll PM you the address. Thank you very much, the guy was upfront with the outstanding finance so not hiding it.

By all means do the deal, shake hands etc, but no way hand over any funds untill the HPI is clear on the car. :y
-
Zirk, thanks for reply, is the phonecall AND an email from the finance company enough proof if i see it come through when with the seller, and print it off?
-
I've paid off a couple of cars by credit card over the phone and got back an email with a reference number on it.
-
It's a Corsa ....... surely there's another :-\
-
so STMO if he pays it off in front of me and gets an email ref. number in print from them all should be ok yes?

Yeah but, as Al says, I've never done it on a weekend.

That me first thought, WALK away, lots of other suitable cars available, the worst that could happen it the bailiff visits with a tow truck, why take the risk.......... :)
-
Why hasnt he paid finance off already tho? As said, its a corsa plenty about and get a hpi report by 1 off them txt message services ,an email can be forged,he just rings a mate, sets up fake email account sends it to seller and looks like its done,if you really want it tell him to pay finance off straight away and wait a week longer then hpi etc should be updated if all above board.

You can pay the finance off yourself... that way you know it's done :y
Obviously this only works if the amount owing is less than they want for the car... you can then give cash for the difference :y If they won't entertain this and/or won't tell you the outstanding finance amount, run away, quickly...
Oh, and Saturday is feasible if it's one of the bigger lenders, both Blackhorse and Santander trade on a Saturday :y

This could be an option.

Thanks so much for all the advice, terrific response from all the OOFers per usual. Big shoutout to Essex Al who went the extra mile for the OOFer crusade. I've decided not to go for the car as it's not worth the risk and there is other corsas out there. Thanks again, Paul.
