Title: How long do air bags last?

I have read a few accounts of air bags bursting on old cars, the stitching or the fabric tearing after 15 years or so. In the Rover Streetwise handbook I think I read that after 12 years all the airbags should be replaced. That sounds like moe expense than the car's worth. It certainly poses a problem for owners of old cars, like us
