Title: Minimum age for driving
Post by: tidla on 13 February 2015, 18:06:33
I always imagined it was 21 years of age with all the restrictions they put on young drivers these days.

Very sad. Can see the law changing on this one.

Just goes to show lowering the limit isn't always a good thing. Unfortunately in this case innocent people have died.  >:(

Used to be an instructor with Nat Ex,and then we would never even look at any applicants under 21.....basically because the company self insure and they made their own rules.Probably missed out on some potentially good drivers :-\ younger candidates were easier to train...especially  car drivers who had not long passed their test. Regrettably always exceptions to the rules though ::)

I thought HGV and PSV were 21, well they certainly used to be when I took them, I admit it was a few years ago now......... :) :)

Prerequisites are:
Over 18 for Lgv C (21 for trailer entitlement entitlement)
Full licence for at least a year
Lgv Theory
Hazard perception
CPC theory
CPC practical
Lgv practical

The two CPC tests are designed for new commercial drivers with no experience and cover all sorts of things that older drivers would have either learnt on the job or never bothered about... From checking for stowaways to diet/lifestyle advice :-\

To be 19 and driving a tipper would suggest a promising career, as he wouldn't have been employed lightly...

The republic of ireland had the age at 17 for some cases. Seen 17yr olds driving brand new daf xfs at 40t being driven by them regular. And they where going to england etc. They are still driving today as I see them regular and where pretty good with the trucks, didn't abuse them etc. This was at least 10 yrs ago, and there was some rule about it, maybe could only drive for there family or something.

Nobody moaned, 70 years ago when 18year olds with 9hrs experience were flying hurricane's and spitfires, or 20 year olds flying bombers after 3-6 months conversion.

Needs must. While looking for a bit more info, i came across this page.

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/history-of-road-safety-and-the-driving-test/history-of-road-safety-the-highway-code-and-the-driving-test

Im guessing they didnt stop driving either when required.

I didn't see any mention that the driver was at fault,or is it because he's 19 he had to be. ???

That seems to be the implication so far. He sounded the horn before the crash which implies to that there was a problem in stopping the tipper.  :-\ :-\

It wouldn't be the first time that a  lorry has burnt its brakes, look in any escape lane and you'll see trenches where some poor sod has piled in.

Looks like an older scania, possibly with drums all round?

Poorly adjusted brakes with hot shoes and drums, full load and a keen driver..

Took me two goes to get thru the test at 27. doubt i would of had the skills required at 19.

but the driver obviously had because he passed the test ........ let's not hang him before we know the facts.

IIRC that is a long downhill stretch, so quite believable that brakes could have been overheated and not much use by then, especially if he was motoring to start with. :-\

When trucks decide not to play, they don't give a toss who is behind the wheel. Early reports state he was blowing his horn on the way down...seems to me like a sensible head, albeit young, on his shoulders. Not sure of speed, but he could have tried to bale out.!!!!!
In Wycombe, over the years, we have had plenty of runaways down the two hills into town, including a petrol tanker. Surprised the town was not blown to kingdom come, I went down one day on the way to work, and saw my dad parked in a line of cars.......due to a runaway, all the drivers side of the car had been ripped off. And that one was a bloke with years of experience driving.
And the driver ages in other cases has varied too :y

Car third attempt... I still dislike Crawley
DSA Taxi test first attempt, two minors
LGV2 first attempt, five minors
LGV1 second attempt four minors (first attempt only had two faults, one being the reverse exercise :-[)
Most recently constabulary non response driving vompetency test for most everything in the fleet...

And if Andy B is allowed forklift and mewps, them I shall add airside driving at Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted, Luton and Cardiff  ;D

Ah yes, the beeb is in full Daily Fail outrage, and needs to blame somebody because a child was killed.

Whilst we don't know the facts, it seems likely that the poor lad lost control of the vehicle and did everything he could to regain, then warn everyone. Could any of us, or some oppswit idiot who can't get a real job so has to be a journalist idiot, do any better?  Likely not, and remember we do not know the full circumstances.

Twist it another way. Grandma and kiddie on a crossing with a hunk of iron barrelling towards you blaring horns. Couldn't they have moved a bit quicker?  But nobody would suggest that as a possible solution to avoidance, as it would be socially unacceptable.

In the early 80's I was subbing to Rothamans, driving a forklift with a cage on holding propane bottles, keeping the heating going in the factory, no fork lift licences in those days.... :D :D

Old skool  people are getting towards retirement, new legislation is making it harder to work, wont be long before there will be a shortage of HGV/PSV drivers, and they keep the country running................ :-X :-X

Death by dangerous driving for the lad and gross criminal negligence for the transport manager/boss :'(

Suggests that the truck was poorly maintained and the driver didn't carry out/record his daily checks :-\

I travel that road often, it is very steep indeed. It is NSL, then 20 with a newly introduced chicane.

Al - You've driven the route aswell.

If faulty brakes are part of the equation, he did well to avert an even worse incident! Still, a terrible tragedy.
