Title: It's 11600 miles......
Post by: Field Marshal Dr. Opti on 18 February 2015, 17:31:25
...since I last replaced the rear tyres on my Omega.

Good....bad......indifferent, or just plain piss poor mileage?.....You tell me.

Anyway, my wallet is now £188 lighter. :'(

Assuming £15  a corner to balance and fit, each tyre has cost me the princely sum of £79.

I'm reasonably pleased with that. :y

Assuming you drive everywhere like you're trying to qualify for pole position at Spa, not bad..

I got about 28,000 miles out of the pair I replaced last week for the MOT. That's budget 235/45 17(no, I don't remember/care what brand they were) on the back. I don't live like a lunatic, but I do believe in making decent progress.

How on earth do you get such mileage?.... ;) I'm impressed.

You must drive the undernourished four pot to get those figures. :D :D

EDIT......3.0 V6. You must be related to that funny Tunnie chappie. ;) ;D

People have always said that you get many more miles if you mainly drive on the motorway, as opposed to twisties or stop/start A roads. I'm not sure but it seems to make sense. My journeys mainly consist of stop/start, left bend/ right bend, up hill/down hill so I'll see what my mid range tyres do. Yours are on a rear wheel driven vehicle, mine are fwd.....lots of parameters to take into account.
Where's Christine?  ;D

There may be something in what you say. :)

I was thinking that 11600 miles was 'reasonable.

My old FJ1200 would trash a rear tyre in 1500 miles. :-\

I've just changed the fronts on mine, down to about 3mm and my car has covered 17000 miles. It came with michelins on.

Crikey good......or crikey bad?... ::) ::) ;)

I reckon they were down to 1.0mm. Certainly well below the legal limit of 1.8mm.

That's slightly more, IIRC, than I got, but not by a huge amount.

I believe tunnie once got 45k from a set. But he drives like a, errrrr, tunnie ;D

I just drive it!

Back when I used to drive my cars hard, I used to get 32,000 miles out of a set of 185/70 13 on 2.0l Capris. That was wearing all 4 evenly, without rotating them! A well set-up 4cylinder Capri is still hard to beat for fun without being ridiculously fast.

Both rear tyres have lost 10 PSI overnight. :-\

I asked the fitter to clean the rims before putting the new tyres on but....... :-\

I just can't seem to keep the air in the tyres.

Any ideas, chaps?

Take them back.

The possibilities are as follows:

1) Leaking between rim and tyre. You warned the fitter to clean the rims. If there was a problem with the rim surface likely to affect the seal he should have notified you.

2) Leaking around or through the tyre valve. This should have been replaced with the tyre, so down to the tyre fitter to resolve.

3) Porous wheels. Not a problem that's common with the Omega wheels, so for you to have suffered 2 defective wheels would be strange.

If they're losing 10 PSI overnight it should be childsplay to spot the leak. Take them back to the tyre depot and ask them to investigate. :y

If they have lost 10psi by tomorrow, and make a song and dance - 3rd time, wasted time, wasted fuel, yada yada yada.

The fitter I spoke to had bruised knuckles where they'd scraped along the floor. :)

Oh oh :o

You have so got to go back.

Might be an idea to start keeping a record of visits, PSI every time you measure them and date/time. Not that it counts for anything but your tool for measuring pressure will be different reading to theirs. The key thing is the differences.

http://www.kwik-fit.com/customer-comments.asp   might be helpful at some juncture.

If the local knuckle draggers (did he not have fur on them to protect them from the ground?) won't help, just phone their customer support line and ask if it's normal not to be able to trace a leak that's losing 10PSI per day.

IME, KF work by employing complete muppets, but being willing to make amends when they, inevitably, arse things up.
