Title: An interesting one with my Octavia

Before the aux belt tensioner let go a week ago.....the temp gauge used to sit at 90C...all the time...smack in the middle of the gauge.

Since it was replaced....and a water pipe was removed/replaced to do the job...it now varies between 70-80C....occasionally going upto 90 (never higher) if I push it hard or get stuck in traffic.....then soon as I ease off it drops to 70-80 again.....doesn't seem to be taking any longer to warm up....so don't think it the stat  :-\

I would have thought any airlocks would have gone by now....and coolant level is fine....

Did the Aux belt damage an electric fan or temperature sensor?

Has to be stat not working right. Nothing else controls engine coolant temp.

Has to be stat not working right. Nothing else controls engine coolant temp.

Check the stat electrical connection is ok, the modern stats have a heater in them so the ECU can tit about with it.

In theory it should throw a fault code if its not but, its a VAG and like BMW they rarely put the light on so as to keep you happy and convinced its all ok.

Other than that, its a lazy stat

Thanks for that Mark, I did wonder if it was an electrical stat and the garage monkey had unplugged something when removing part of the cooling pipes and forgot to reconnect it.

Its got the EML on anyway, as I haven't got round to finding why the radiator fan isn't working  ::)

Two things I did find out is that the ECU buggers around with the temp gauge....it holds it 90C even if the eng temp is higher, apparently its lets it show the 'real' temp if it goes over 100C  :o
T'other is that if you press 'ECON' button and press the 'up or screen' button together it puts the climate panel into a mode showing what 30 different sensors are reading. Passenger side temp display shows the code for sensor, driver side temp display shows the value. Is there something similar on Omegas? Never seen it mentioned before....but did make me wonder if the climate panel on Omegas had the same thing...  :-\

Most modern cars frig the temp gauge so as not to scare the driver

Nothing on the Omega as its the sort of functionality that requires CAN networks (on most cars the Display is the bridge between low-medium-high CAN buses).

So on later Vx you press and hold a certain button and then you can scroll through diag menus for satnav, engine, audio etc.

Had a search about for the stat today....couldn't find it  :-[ That engine bay is rammed full. No wonder the garage monkey had to remove water pipes to get to aux belt tensioner....

So decided to check the fuse for cooling fans....its got two types of fuse boxes next to the battery, identified its type2....and no mention in the handbook, for a cooling fan fuse for that type of fuse box, so decided it must in the other fuse box inside....but no mention either in that fuse listing  :(

So that was half an hour wasted  :( More searching online me thinks....

Was fitting a two way radio to a '62 Octavia yesterday...

Makes a Mk1 Astra look well built :o

Its all fixed now....it spent the day in the garage....

The lowish temp reading and the rad fans are now back to normal operation  :y

It kept the mechanic busy all day tho finding the fault.

Turned out to be a goosed secondary electric water pump blowing a fuse which also fed the rad fans.

The 'autodata?' program he had and the car manual is an absolute joke for wiring diagram and fuse information.....he ended up cutting the covering off the loom to find out what the fuse fed. Once the water pump was disconnected, a new fuse and with the aid of the snap on diagnostic thingy, he could turn the fans on/off as he liked  :y

The water pump probably took a bashing from the pheasant I hit, as it went under the car   :-\

Just need to fix the front fog light now ... sometime  ::)
