Title: What car for my daughter?
Post by: Kate on 08 March 2015, 11:40:25
Hi all.

My daughter is looking for a car that is reliable and economical. I'm not sure what to recommend. She likes new Mini's and new Beetles but I have never driven these cars so don't know if they are any good.

I did a buy it now last night on a Mini on Ebay then this morning he guy said he was selling it to someone else so my daughter got really upset. >:(

I really want to give her good advice. She lives in Warwick and her budget is £1500.

Has anyone got any opinions about what she should look for? She is 23 so insurance is an issue.

Thanks for any help. :y

Corsas are very popular with young un's but not very stylish. I like Fiestas as we have had an 04 since new and its been fantastic.

Corsa.

Not much to go wrong with them, cheap to run and I think they are stylish but then I don't like Nissan Jukes etc.

Quite a few on the forum have one and so there is some advice available.

Just bought my daughter a Corsa 1.2 , parts are plentiful and reasonably cheap . Watch out for rattly engine and sloppy hard to change 1st to 2nd gear  ;)

Being a woman your daughter is best suited to a  small car.  This is because women do not possess the spatial awareness that men have. :-* :-* :-* :-* ;)

I agree with Mr EMD and Mr Varche that a Corsa 'C' would make  a good choice. :y

We have a 1.2 SXI, a car that even a woman can safely handle*

* Reversing and clutch control excepted. :)

3 daughters (over 21) 3 different cars Seat Ibiza, Fiat Panda, Citroen C2. All around the same budget. All only had minor problems since bought, the main thing is that they found them and I made sure they where value for money

SWMBO has a 1.4 Corsa SE, much newer than the others and a nice car

Corsa C or, if the budget will run to it, Mk6 Fiesta. Even the common issues with both are boring which is what makes them so popular.

Don't get an automatic or diesel.

Anyway, back onto the topic  ;D ;D

We picked up for the lad a 5 door corsa c 1.3 cdti on a 54 a couple of weeks ago for under 1400 quid with only 96K on the clock.

Its a bit noisy when cold, pish easy to drive and unbelievable on fuel. Its pretty good fun to chuck around the streets / lanes too if your that way inclined  :y

£1600 seems more than reasonable for a Mini.

It's worth checking with BMW that it's had a recall for the power steering pump or a warranty claim that replaced it, was a big issue in the early days of the BMW Mini. Consider the heater matrix a service item but it's an absloute piece of pish to change, literally a 10 minute job even STMO could do it !!

She must be over the moon with that it's lovely :y

Drove the mini from looe to Warwick yesterday to deliver it to my daughter. It drove perfectly and she is really pleased with it.

The power steering makes a whirring noise so I will check the recall thing.
