hi all,
im new to this site, ive just saved a w-reg omega 2.5 turbo diesel elite from scrap, as its snapped the viscous fan off and apparently the owner was told by a garage he couldnt get a new one anywhere. anyway, it was scrapped with a local breakers yard who called me about the wheels on it, and i managed to talk them into selling me the car!
is there anything that can be done to up the power of the 2.5td engine? im told its a bmw engine, thats detuned as standard from the original bmw spec? im not looking to go mental, but if i can up the power/torque abit that would be great, i was thinking about a de-cat and a tuning box? is there anything else i can do?
someone has also told me that it would be benefical to not bother fitting a new viscous fan? and instead wire up the normal engine fans to a switch so if its in traffic you can flick them on to stop it overheating as quick?? apparently by removing the viscous fan it would rev up abit quicker and free-er?

1. Yep, full fat tuning chip (PM the Boy for details and supply) brings it back up to BMW spec, makes a big difference, but if it is an auto, you will need to fit the stronger AR35 box to cope with the extra power.
2. No need to fit a new viscous fan if the coolant system is in good order, I haven't had mine fitted for 18 months or so, and even in very hot weather no high temps indicated.

Exactly what Shackeng says.
We have a source for some tried and tested chips - unlike many of the trash we've seen from ebay. These won't turn it into a sports car, but make it into a much more drivable machine, with better power delivery. Brings it back into the region of the original BMW spec, approx. 150bhp (GM detuned to 120bhp). It transformed my TD Elite. It also improved (when not thrashing it!) MPG by around 10%
The downside of chipping these is the fuel computer reads wrong - it will read about 15-20% over (ie, I used to get about 31mpg over a tank from my auto, the MID claimed I was getting 37ish)
If its an auto, you will need a stronger gearbox. The TD + Auto combination isn't anywhere near as economical as the TD + Manual combination.
The viscous isn't required. Noisy, power sapping, inconvenient, useless piece of junk. If you tow, I might consider it, otherwise, don't bother. Remove the plastic cowling around rad as well :y
The TD needs regular oil changes (every 3k).

Also check that the electric intercooler fan is free to turn. If the viscous fan has prevented the electric fans from kicking in then the intercooler fan is prone to seizing solid.

That happened to mine so I have followed Omegatoy's route and fitted a separate switch to the intercooler fan, via a relay. :y

mines a manual thankfully, so atleast i dont have to worry about changing the gearboxes!
i wont bother replacing the viscous fan if its not needed, so thats a bonus aswell then.
i will check the intercooler fan when i pick the car up.
with regards to the tuning chip - where can i get one from, and how much does it cost? is it a tuning box or an actual chip that needs to be fitted to the ECU?

Chip, (Eprom), depending on your ECU, may be Push In or may be Soldered In, if the later best to get a Chip Holder soldered in place for ease of future use.

Depending on the year of your TD & ECU number I have a chip that i saved from a mates car which got scrapped, & his was a manual box. :y
