Hi Guys,
Just got back from a 30 mile run and noticed when I switched off that the fan was still running and was loud enough for me to notice.
Left it for ten minutes and its still on !
Not right is it ? surely it should be off by now.
Any ideas please chaps?
thanks

Engine/radiator cooling fan? :-\
The only time I've ever had that happen was in France after a fairly long tow in 30-odd degs. Starting the car again and stopping it 'fixed' it and it didn't ever happen again. I put it down to a sticking relay somewhere. :-\
-
Yes cooling fan, tried turning engine on and off but still going now, its been about 25 minutes
-
Well its still going, its now been about 45 minutes.
Would it be ok if I disconnected the battery until tomorrow, or is that going to cause another problem ?
-
I'd say stuck relay or faulty sensor.
Yeah, discon battery for now - make sure you have radio code, and you'll have to reset sunroof and windows later
-
Check the battery fusebox for a very hot relay and pull it. Quickly.
-
Why not just pull Fuse #4 :-\
-
Doesn't touch the radiator fans... When the relays fail they're fed straight from battery fuse only controls the relay feed...

I Knew that :-X :-X :-X

Taxi Al, where is battery fusebox please, I have disconnected the battery for now as per advice.
It was the fan behind the radiator by the way, the one in front was not going if that makes any difference.
Cheers

It is where you have just been under that triangular flap/box

As said triangular cover next to battery... Could simply unplug the fan motor, but pulling relay will actually cut the power. Unplugging it simply stops the fan. Plug stays very much live ;)

Thank you Taxi Al.
Just to be sure, If I reconnect the battery in the morning, would I be likely to make it to vauxhall dealers 5 miles away, and should I remove relay first or leave it in place ?
Are these relays available anywhere by the way or does it have to be VX.
Thanks.

It's a good chance your car will start in the morning, just so long as the fan hasn't drained it too much. Once started it'll drive as far as you want .... maybe park up on a hill ::) Not sure what type the relay is, but I can't see it being too odd ball ..... if so a breaker here will sort you. :y

Much obliged Andy, I will give it a go in the morning, just hope it didnt take too much out of the battery.
cheers, :) :)

Does anyone happen to know the part number for the cooling fan relay on a 2002 2.2DTi estate please.?
I was going to pop down to a vauxhall dealer near me for one but apparently they are no longer there and the nearest one is 30 miles away.
Where would be the best place online for one of these?
cheers

Frosts are still in Shoreham ???
Otherwise Go Vauxhall has a new Parts Centre in Burgess Hill, only ten or so miles from you :y

Frosts are still in Shoreham
Thats where I was going, but apparently their parts dept is now in Chichester!
Chichester said that the part was no longer available and so did Steeles of worthing, thats why I was wondering where else I could get one.
I have checked all the fuses and have just run the car for 20 miles and there is no fan running now, so dont know what the problem was or is.
There is no heat in any of the relays near the battery, so cant be sure which if any is at fault.
So I will just have to drive it and hope for the best
cheers :-\ :)

You need to diagnose if its the relay or the rad switch first, rather than willy-nilly part swapping ;)
